Buy an AR at Walmart?

Postby ronin069 on Sat Oct 20, 2012 11:07 am

Guys...Likely old news to many of you, but doing some research on my first AR I see that Walmart is carrying the SigM400.

A few years ago I did a paper on Walmart for school; one of the things I did discover is that they truly do require many of their vendors to create a sub-par version of their regular brands so that Walmart can offer for lower prices. Levi is a very real example, so is Toro...Levi gave in, and the 501's you buy at Walmart are not of the same quality you would get at Macy's. Toro refused, and is the reason you cannot buy Toro at Walmart.

I am surrounded by Walmarts, and their M400 prices are significantly better than I would find at Gander or Cabela's, much less the local shops. Anyone have additional info on their thoughts around Walmart rifles?

Honestly, i think you answered your won question. But since you posted, you still have concerns.

Perhaps you could write the AR company an email and ask them. Wright it the same way you did with your post here and ask them point blank are your AR's sub par. Who knows, they might just answer you in kind.

Walmart is a whole different breed... The do what they want and how they want... and it it werent for the cheep ammo prices, I might not ever go there.

can ya give an example of a "significantly better" price? :?

I know, years ago, Wal-Mart sold push-feed Winchesters ... they were called "shadow" ... which were nothing like the control-feed "ultimate shadow" ... they were closer to $300 ... and even today, some guys are tryin to sell em fer "ultimate shadow" prices!

I bought a couple 11-87's from em ... they were "premiers" ... they had "light contour" bbl's ... and were clearly marked as such ... otherwise, I've never known em to be anything less than what ya'd get from Cabela's?!

that said, if I had it to do over again, I'd pay $50 more to not hafta deal with buyin' a gun from Wal-Mart! :|

I'd spend the extra $200 and get a Colt 6920. Sig quality these days is too suspect IMHO to give me any confidence that they are a cost-effective firearm if reliability is an important criterion.

Both the Walmarts in my area sell guns, but neither have AR-15 in stock.

My local fleet store sells the Sig M400 for $899.99. My boss has one, and it's a good AR-15. I'm happy with my Del Ton Echo 316 with magpul goodies on it. $729.99 is what I paid for mine.

Buy an AR at Walmart?

Postby ronin069 on Sat Oct 20, 2012 3:57 pm

Wow...I didn't even think about Fleet...got one of the 5 minutes from the home front. Someone suggested, and I am going to follow through, sending an e-mail to SIG and ask them if their products at Walmart are up to their standards or are of a different quality -

I bought a .22 from Walmart in Cambridge about three years ago, after the other Walmarts stopped selling guns. Haven't been up there since, but you could call to check.

Phhht...I wouldn't even buy potato chips from Wally World. Won't set foot in there unless I absolutely, positively have to! Yeah, you save a few bucks, but you're also contributing to the demise of all the little guys trying to make it in retail.
