All O/U's are basic :D

Check out the CZ Redhead Deluxe, I love mine and it's served me very well.

I like the SKBs and weatherbys. They sound high dollar, but if you pick up the lowest field grade ones they are not bad at all. I like those ones cuz you ding your gun up anyway pheasant hunting. My dad has a Weatherby Orion and an SKB something or other that is basically the smaller 20 gauge version of the Orion. He picked the Orion up LNIB for $800. The Skb was not nearly that much either used. I just think they are really high quality guns, I was a Browning Citori believer until my 16 gauge shot both barrels at once and then was having delayed firing. Cz are also pretty nice for the dough. Never shot one but have held a few. I don't know what your defintion of basic is for a O/U. BUt thats my .02

Go somewhere with a huge selection, and put 'em all up to yer shoulder ... if one of 'em "feels right", buy it! ;)

I wouldn't discount an automatic, neither!

Another vote for the CZ. I have the Redhead Deluxe, but if all you want it for is trap, I would suggest the Canvasback. The same basic gun, but the C-back has extractors instead of ejectors, so you don't have to pick your spent shells up off the ground. (plus, the C-back is roughly $100 cheaper than the Redhead)

Just a note on those Orions, about 30 years ago there were 3 or 4 of them on a trap club I was in, the barrels were sleeved onto the stub chambers and every one of them started pulling the barrels off the chambers after a couple thousand rds, Weatherby replaced them all but the replacements did the same thing, they all traded off.

never heard of that before. Mine is not 30 years old either. I know for a fact that it has at least 3,000 rounds through it. It has seen quite a few leagues at Metro gun club.

The weatherby Orions are made by SKB. Personally they get a premium becuase of the name stamped on them, much like a kimber. SKB makes a solid shotgun, not as high as qaulity as they once were but still a good work horse.

For the money I'd look at a CZ or a Franchi, or even a used Beretta.

If you're not planning to hunt with it, look into a secondhand Winchester 101. They're generally a bit cheaper than Brownings. S&W came out (and promptly discontinued) a fine line of Turkish made o/u's a couple of years ago and I'm still kicking myself for not buying one at that time. All the previously mentioned shotguns are good choices too. Get one that fits the best.

Its funny cuz for every brand listed I can think of one model that I have held or shot, and they were all nice. It's been said before, just go and pick a few up. Guys think I'm nuts cuz I carry a 30'' barrel orion around for pheasant hunting. What can I say? It shoots good for me. I can kill a long ways with. I have seen guys do the same with 24'' Keep barrel length in mind. For me, nothing shorter than 28''. And if this is really just going to be a trap gun, I would advise the same.
