First AR

Postby MasonK on Sat Dec 22, 2012 10:40 pm

Pretty excited about this- I decided to move into AR after holding out for years. I have been bugging the Atomic Tactical guys since they opened the storefront and finally pulled the trigger two weeks ago on a build. I'm glad I did it when I did now; I just wish I would have bought another lower for the wife because I was going to build her one from the ground up.

A.T. did a great job and delivered a great rifle for a very good price. I'm going to post a review on them so I won't go into that here.

Here she is. Not a super tacticool rifle, but I bet she'll go bang just the same.

Well bud you gotta list off the specs of the rifle. Like lower upper barrel etc.

All I can tell is that's it's a m4 profiled carbine, with MagPul MOE parts

That's very similar to my m4gery only mine's FDE. I really like the MOE stuff, especially in the cold.

Rainier lower with (I believe) a Delton M4 upper. Stock, forend, and grip are Magpul. The Bushnell TRS-25 was an afterthought at the shop yesterday when I picked it up.

Is there a public range where I can sight her in in the south metro? I do my pistols at Gander Lakeville since its minutes from my house, but I don't think I'm going to be zeroing a rifle very well at 10 yards.

.223 does well at 25yds, as the bullet rises to that point and then falls to 100 in the same plane.

Huh? I'm completely confused by this statement. I can't calculate a scenario where that occurs with a 55 grain .223 bullet, or where the trajectory would cross zero at 25 yards and 100 yards.

Old wives tale I guess.

You want 1.5" low @25 to be zeroed out to 200 w/55gr from what I'm seeing.

From what I've read, isn't it 25 & 300 and 50 & 200?

I've see a lot of people use these references, but I've also seen meters and yards used interchangeably on these numbers as well. Since 300 meters is ~328 yards, that isn't exactly apples to apples when talking about MoA groups. Not that I can even see the target at 300 meters without a scope...

May want to re-chect your math.

At a 25M zero, you are at a Max point blank range of about 280 meters. That will keep it inside a 12" diam circle. Or a 6" rise or fall from the Line Of Sight.

Yes. What I calculate from chronographing PMC Bronze .223 55gr FMJ at 2880 FPS zeroed at 50 yards and out of a 16 inch barrel is 1.18 inch low at 25 yards and .21 inch high at 200 yards. Your numbers above would work out better if using meters rather than yards.

The IBZ is fine for those relative few who are still using A2 sights or for that matter use iron sights at all in this day of accurate and reliable red dot sights. Better off and simpler IMHO to just zero at 50 yards. Your POI won't vary more than about 1.5 inches from 15 yards out to about 250+ yards.

That is a v e r y n i c e "First AR"!!! Congrats. Got my first recently, too. Bought the last one at Cabela's last week. Standing there at the counter with three being sold and hearing "only one left" just bought it. At first I thought "what did I do" and listed for sale. After only one reply to my post and realizing what I have I've decided to keep it. Let the fun begin :)

Point of Aim/point of impact are the same at 50 meters and 200 meters with a 5O/200 meter zero. At 100 meters with a 50/200 zero the round will strike about 1.5 inches high and at 10 meters the round will strike about 1.5 inches low. This is my preferred zero. I zero initially at 50 meters then move on to confirm it at 200 when time permits.
