Scope suggestions for supersonic 300 blk?

Postby FJ540 on Sun Dec 23, 2012 3:46 pm

So I've got the 16" Daniel Defense barrel coming tomorrow, and I'm completely uninspired on what to use for optics on this upper.

The idea behind getting this one was 30-30 ballistics in an AR platform. I'll basically be using it as a brush gun for deer, yotes, and maybe hogs. I'd go irons if it didn't get so damn dark in my woods well before the end of legal shooting hours, so large objectives and 30mm tubes are appealing.

I've got a cabela's employee pricing coupon, so their offering would be helpful in suggestions, but not mandatory. I'd like to stick to the <$500 range.

I've got a red dot on the .223 upper for this rig and don't care for it on deer, so none of those.

What would you get?

What would you expect to be your max shooting distance? Do you prefer a higher powered scope or are you comfortable shooting several hundred yards with a low powered optic?

Guys are shooting these out to 300yds with great accuracy, but 1-200yds would be my typical engagement range where I'll be using it.

I like high power, but I also want a decent FOV, so that's another reason for leaning towards a 50mm objective lens.

Travis Haley has some brass ones! i say that because even if i were a top tier combat guru, i still wouldn't wear my Glock pointed at my junk!

and as FJ said, there's a BIG difference between combat effectiveness and accuracy. the 5.56Nato is combat effective to 500 meters on a point target and 800 meters on an area target. that's hit-or-miss. remember, the combat mentality is that a wounded badguy is better than a dead badguy. the minute a TRUE sniper starts using 300BLK for long-range precision shooting, THAT'S when you can call it a precision round.

FJ, to keep this on topic, i'd personally look at a 1-4 optic. the Vortex PST is a great little scope that won't break the bank either.

damn, i should really contact Vortex Optics about becoming a salesman, i just realized that i try pimpin their products every time i can ;)

Big bore, big scope.

Now if Troy would ever send me my 13" forearm, the upper could be complete (when I decide on a muzzle device).

Yep, there's way too much barrel out in front of that thing to look good. Now if lowers of reasonable price would come back I could finish the build.

The humanitarian in me says I'll offer to store your upper on one of my spare lowers until you get one :P
