Best bang for the buck Red Dots?

Postby FuBruB on Tue Dec 25, 2012 8:33 pm

I'm looking for a best bang for the buck red dot sight for my new Colt m4.
Was trying to search the forum and find reviews for what you guys seem to like the best but couldn't find any.
If anyone could direct me to past topics or good info I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

The Aimpoint pro seems like the best bang for the buck and you should really stick to a name brand for something as nice as your Colt. There are sales occasionally where you can find the pro for under $400.

Aside from the size and shorter battery life, i thought the aimpoint pro was supposed to be one of the best bang for the buck red dots. It comes with with a mount so there is no added expense and can be had for around $400.

I've always been an Eotech fan, but I have an Aimpoint PRO and a T-1too. I have never cared for the T-1, but I have to agree that the Aimpoint PRO is the best deal going.

If you prefer Eotechs, I would prefer the transverse-battery XPS and EXPS models over the inline battery versions.

Kinda depends how many bucks you have to bang?

I know guys with $75 bushnells who drop deer consistently. $1000 red dots work great too.

Eotechs kick ass. I like my vortex sparc... dspends how hard you will use it.

Well I'd like to stay under $500. So this Aimpoint Pro seems like the one I'll try. It's going on my M4 so it will be for target, some competitive shooting, and home defense. Mostly target shooting.

It will be my first try at a red dot, always been a Leupold scope guy.

I've found a few sites already advertising it for $400 with free shipping. I'll keep my eyes peeled and buy when I see a sale.

Also can I co-witness this red dot with the mount included with my irons? A2 front and MBUS rear?

Or will I need to get a different mount? Thanks!

I'm not too familiar with the magnifiers though, what model will work with this PRO?

Try to get a look through both an Eotech and Aimpoint PRO before plunking down the money. Some people have eyesight with enough astigmatism that the reticle on one, the other, or both, appears fuzzy or blurry.

Any magnifier will work. I use an Eotech G23 with both my Eotechs and Aimpoints and it works great. A somewhat better magnifier is the Eotech G33. Aimpoint magnifiers are good but are more expensive and don't include the mount. Stay away, IMHO. If you check out Primary Arms, they have some pretty cheap magnifiers. I've heard good and bad about them, mostly bad.

The PRO with the stock QRP mount will co-witness slightly below the center with A2 sights. An Eotech magnifier with the included 7mm riser in place will work just fine with the PRO.

What kind I competitions are you shooting?

The problem with most dots is that the reticle is too large for longer range precision work. Look at the Leupold Prismatic it is far and away the #1 choice for dot shooters in the 3gun world.

Most governing bodies allow dots in the iron sight division adding magnification will bump you in to TacOptics instead of TacIrons and most guys in TacOps are shooting some sort of a low power variable optic with or without illumination.

The Trijicon RX30 has turned out to be one of my favorites.

I also like the Aimpoint PRO RDS.

I've got some Lucid HD7 RDS coming and will be trying them out as they look to be a very solid value option.

If I had $500 to drop on a red dot; I'd get an AimPoint...
The vigilant have found good used ones for cheap as well.

I didn't have $500 to drop on a red dot so I bought a Strikefire.
I had a little higher hopes in dot definition and parallax - It's advertised as parallax free after 50 yards. I've found that to be false.
But other than that, it's been durable and held up in inclimate conditions. Didn't freeze up on me after being out all day at maybe 15 deg F... I'll have to try it on one of these colder days. CR 2 battery is not as prevalent as the 123's, though.
