Need a smith for a lever gun

Postby rhoadc on Sun Dec 30, 2012 4:29 pm

I have my great grandfathers rifle. It is starting to show its age so I would like to have is stripped down and cleaned up. Since I know nothing about lever guns I would hate to break something. Can you guys recommend a smith who won't charge me a ton to clean it up? I live out in Somerset and work in St. Paul.

Any competent gunsmith should be able to take care of your. I would avoid the one at Joes Sporting Goods, other than that anyone in the metro should be able to handle it for you with ease.

I know I should know this off hand but if memory serves is a Winchester 1892 in 25-20.

On a side note I would to shoot it, after it checks out. How common is ammo in 25-20?

Hi and Happy News Year! I certainly would NOT recommend stopping in to GS in Anoka. I was assaulted by the owner there... it went like this, stopped in to see about some 10-22 mods and after introducing myself was told "I don't have all day to talk about your gun" I headed for the door. The owner then said "here's my card" which I replied "your card won't be necessary, I won't be giving you my business" as I was "totally" turned off. I went there wanting to do business and was met with attitude. This 300 lb man then stated "good, and don't come back here". Half way out the door I stopped to say "what did you say?" when he bull rushed me and shoved me thru the door. This shop is in the back room of a pawn type store I frequent to look at guns and hey, just entertainment. And now I can't go in there any more? Owner of the other shop told me on the phone he had no business banning me from there and could not believe what he saw that day. Anyways- certainly would not recommend.

Only other gun smith I have used is Ahlmans in Morristown, Mn top notch stock refinishing on a 1922 REM 30 no mechanical work tho.

I am sure you may be able to find service closer to cities... just stay away from GS
good luck

+1

Your not going to find 25/20 ammo at walmart but should find it at Cabelas or Ahlmans or any larger GS not going to be cheap.
