I don't have it yet. I'm buying it from my brother. Still in the box, never shot.

I was looking for something inexpensive in .308. For some reason, Fleet Farm doesn't carry the Savage AXIS in .308. They have 243, 270, 223, 22-250, and 30-06. Any guesses why? Is the AXIS in .308 unpopular, or is the AXIS not a good choice for .308? (assuming you think the AXIS is a good choice in any caliber).

They might just sell out of them right away, it's a pretty popular caliber choice - I know they can and will order anything from their standard supplier catalog on request if they don't stock it.

.308 is an excellent cartridge it just does not have the glitz with everyone that seems to think they need a 7mm Mag to hunt deer, so dealers stock what sells and the .308 seem to be out of favor right now. That said 30-06, 270 been around a long time to and they always seem to have a steady following, the .308 seems to come and go. Kinda like 6mm verse 243, I always prefered the 6mm balistics but it seems to have died while the 243 is still a steady seller.

I'm old, tend to be conservative (non-glitzy) in my caliber choices, and don't need a cannon to put down a deer. I got into the .308 because of it obscenely perfect heritage as an obscenely consistent round. If it says it will drop 16.8 inches at blah, blah range, it does. It ruled the service match game, police sniper squads, and US Military sniper teams for decades. It ain't a 1000 yard round, but will kill anything that needs killing with 600. More importantly, I will hit it if the gun and shooter know what they are doing. And it's baby cousin the .243 is pretty cool deer gun. Only popular deer cartridge that I have owned and not loved is the .270 Winchester. Just as much recoil as .30-06 with a narrower band of bullet weight choices, and no real advantages for me as a hunter or shooter.

If I were to have only one rifle cartridge - It would be the .308/7.62x51.
Do your job and it'll do its job against anything that breaths on the continent of N. America.

But deer aren't particularly finicky about what kills them. Even a .22lr in the vitals will do the job. Assuming you get an angle that you don't have to go through bone to get to it. .270 should suit you well enough.

As far as brush cutting - I've always figured a round that can penetrate a brick wall will do well enough in brush.

Just two (for me)- 165gr or 168gr 8-)

But if you want to accurately and responsibly do a lot of anything else, the .30-06 is the old, reliable, and versatile choice for shooting pills from 110 to 220 grains. I think.

Yep! The Mosin is also one of the most popular hunting rifles for natives in Alaska, rock solid weapon with bulk ammo being available about as cheap as it can get.

This what caliber for deer is like "Ford vs Chevy" "Polaris vs Arctic Cat" and so on and so forth. I think 270 is the most popular here in SD with the 243 being a close second. MN seems to like the 30-06. I have taken deer with several calibers including a couple with a 223 and my buddy shot one this year with a 22-250. Moral of the story as always its the Indian, not the arrow. Get one and get proficient, figure out what your gun likes for ammo and shoot it as much as you can afford to.

... that said, much past 200yd, I'd prefer to opt fer the "arrow" that requires 'bout 1/4 the "dope"! ;)

Must resist posting in this thread……

270 is a great choice, a Kimber in 270 sounds awfully hard to beat.
