Finished installing new FDE furniture on my IO AK

Postby Doc Harvey on Wed Jan 09, 2013 2:53 pm

Polymer receiver extension arrived today. The MAGPUL ACS-L barely fits on it, and won't freely extend/collapse. It's MILSPEC, and the CAA extension tube is allegedly MILSPEC, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Anyway, I'm diggin' the FDE furniture. Can't wait to shoot it!

Thanks Craig! I wanted to buy that AK74 you had for sale a little while back, but didn't have the cash for it at the time. I think this one will work out okay, though.

Does the extension tube seem pretty sturdy? I was debating on doing an AR type stock, but wasn't so sure about adapter options.

Very nice! How do you like the vertical foregrip? Those always seem a little short to me, but I've never actually handled one. Does it fit the hand well?

Also, do you like the Hogue pistol grip? I'm a fan of Hogue products and would definitely consider one of those if I got another AKM style rifle.

I have an underfolder, and i recently put a Bulgarian augmented foregrip on it. Now it doesn't fold closed. After seeking counsel on another site, it appears it needs to be trimmed (obviously). I'll be doing that shortly with the saw, then a little smoothing and i should be able to fold the underfold stock around the wood VFG.

Just an alternative to a plastic one, though that looks cool. The wood VFG, pistol grip and stock, used, cost me about 20.00 shipped, so I thought I'd try that first. I hate to trim the wood VFG, it looks so cool, and someone engraved their GF's name on it, along with some half assed pocketknife lines to act as grip points. If these grips could talk, i wonder what they'd say.

I love the Hogue grip so much, I'm considereing replacing the Magpul grip on my AR with a Hogue. The stubby vertical grip takes some getting used to, but now that I know how I want to hold the forend, I really like it. I've ordered the US Palm "Quad Rail" gas tube cover/forend to replace the Tapco stuff. The top picatinny rail on the Tapco just sits too damn high for my taste, and its black so it can be difficult to pick up the front sight post.
