lets see your "ultimate" rifles, built on the cheap...

Postby Magnum Wheel Man on Thu Jul 10, 2008 7:19 am

I've got one I bought, & one I built...

I bought myself for Christmas this last year, a '96 Mauser professionally sporterized & customized ( probably a long time ago ) it has a turned bolt, custom trigger group, sporter stock, that is glass bedded, barrel shortened & target crowned, I think the safety has been changed out to work with the scope, the bolt still cocks on close, but was jewled... over all, it was a very nice looking 7 X 57 Mauser... I paid right at $200.00 & thought it was one of my bestgun deals of all time...

The other... an old SKS I've had long enough, that I originally paid $89.00 for, & had outfitted with a folding stock, comp / flash hider, scope with a B Square see thru mount, & high cap mags, a long time ago... that I just never really liked, I reciently rebuilt this rifle removing the slip on comp / flash hider, shortening the barrel 1.5" & removing the bayonette & lug, & recrowning the barrel, I removed the scope & mount, & added a target front sight post, & relocated the sight assembly to the step on the barrel that used to hold the bayonette lug, added a Tech Sights rear sight, & removed the stock rear sight, grinding down the center to increase the sight picture, ground down the stock cleaning rod tabs under the front of the barrel, as well as the stock front sling point ( trying to smooth up the look of the business end of the rifle ), I added a custom front sling stud, on the ATI full length composite stock, added an old 20 round fixed box, ditching those junky old SKS replaceable extended magazine ( I have a ton of SKS strippers ) & added a US milsurp web sling... I have less than $200.00 into this rifle as well... hmmm maybe this is my best all time deal ???

I'll add a few pics lets see & hear about yours...

Rifle, build, and cheap usually don’t go together apparently.

+1, especially when you add "ultimate" to the mix.

This is my M4gery, built as cheaply as possible for the features I wanted.

It started life as a Del-Ton M4 kit built on a DPMS stripped lower, total cost to that point just over $600. After that I added the Yankee Hill Machine customizable free float front handguard and vertical handgrip, The YHM flip up front and rear sights, the SOPMOD style cheek rest and rubber butt pad for the standard M4 buttstock, a 3# Jard single stage trigger, and the Eotech holosight. Total cost after all modifications, about $1400, $400 of which is the Eotech.

This is my varmint rifle, which started life as a bone stock Colt Match Target H-Bar 6700 which I got used for $750.

I then added the rifle length version of the same free float front end as on my M4, a YHM pickatinny gas block and flip up front sight, the adjustable version of the Jard 3# single stage trigger, a Versa-Pod bipod, and an inexpensive Barska 6-24x50mm scope on a riser which actually works pretty well but which I expect will still be replaced with a higher quality optic before much longer. total cost on the Colt, about $1300
The bold type giveth, the fine print taketh away.

Emphasis on "The Cheap". Must have woodworking tools.
