What would you buy for a .22 Bolt action

Postby tabberski on Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:38 pm

I'm kicking around buying a somewhat accurate .22 rifle for 50 yard shooting. Would like to keep it under $500.00 I'm sure a few of you out there would have some suggestions on a quality rifle. I am a big guy so a full sized rifle would be nice. Clip feed, adjustable trigger would be nice. Gun will eventually get a scope. Probably the next day! Gun doesn't have to be current new, just a fantastic reputation.

Let me throw this out there also. Could you give me a general reason why you would suggest the rifle you feel is of quality. How does it stand out, or did you just have a good experience with it?

Adult stock
Adjustable trigger
scope mount.
clip feed
Good manufacture reputation

Me and my uncle shot his heavy barrel Savage Mk 2 at about 300 yards standing, and we were hitting the steel silhouette targets. I have never enjoyed anything as much as that! We could hit the big steel targets, but they would only *ping, when we really got dialed in on hold-overs we could hit the smaller targets and knock them over, with a .22lr, at 300 yards. This is a super accurate rifle. We sighted in at 25, 50, and 100 yards and if I remember correct it was shooting 1 hole at 25 yards without any problem.

Zach,
If you and your uncle can consistently hit silhouette targets from an unsupported standing position from 300 yards with a .22lr, you guys need to run, not walk to the nearest NRA Highpower match.

If you can really shoot like that, you will be national champion next year.

I forget what power scope we were using, but this was about a year ago. It was something like a Nikon with a mil dot reticle, but I remember at 300 we were off of the mil-dots and were basically using the spot where the crosshair widened half way down the scope. Now that I think about it, I think we zero'd at 25 though. To be fair, he is big time high power shooter down south, and we had just gotten done with an Appleseed shoot. I don't know how well I could do it again, but the range was fantastic. It was a like a big typical range with berms built up around just loaded with every different steel silhouette target set up in this big area, and we started knocking down targets at 25 yards and eventually just worked our way back to the 300 yard mark. We need a range like this locally! Such a fun day at the range!

Another vid seen @ Rimfire Central- performing the valuable service of ridding the world of a can of bud light
Another vote for a CZ 452
And another encouragement to take those '300 yrd standing' skills onto bigger and better things

Also, just to clarify, I am not trying to brag and if I tried it again right here and now I don't know how well I would do. All I am saying is that I have seen what the Savage can do, and hopefully I will be adding one to my collection eventually. It is a really awesome rifle, and I think they can be had for a fair bit under $250.

An Appleseed shoot will not get you anywhere close to that level of shooting, your uncle must literally be one of the best HP shooters in the country. PM me his name if you don't mind - HP is a pretty small/tight community, and any shooter at that level I'm sure I will recognize the name.

Seriously, come out to a match. I am generally at about all of them in MN and I will even loan you a rifle and provide your ammo for the day. You just show up and pay your match fees and shoot.

OP, sorry for the derail. The CZ 452 is an excellent all-around rifle. All that I have seen are capable of great accuracy right out of the box with reasonably-priced ammo. Cheap, aftermarket trigger spring kits are available to get the feel how you like it. Comes with detachable 5-round magazine and 10-round mags are available. Quite a few variations are available with/without sights etc.

I have had my 452 American for about 10 years and love it. Mine shoots extremely well with SK Standard Plus or Wolf MT(both are the same ammo, around $5/box pre-panic). I have not looked at them for a few years and don't know if much has changed since then. I would not hesitate to buy a used one that was in good shape as .22 barrels will generally last about forever under anything even close to normal use. Mine doesn't get a lot of use anymore as I don't do much of that type of shooting these days, but if I just wanted to go out plinking or hunting squirrels or rabbits, it's the gun I'd grab.

Regards,
Erik
