Savage Replacement Barrels - need help

Postby Sigfan220 on Tue Jul 09, 2013 3:20 pm

I am looking to have a barrel made for my Savage 110. I called Eabco and he can't do any custom work beyond what's listed on the site. I am also looking at Pac-nor. Has anyone used Pac-Nor for a replacement barrel? It looks like they are pretty backed up. Are there any other places I should be looking? I'd like to keep it under $300 since it's just going to get burned up quick.

I am looking at a 26" varmint weight barrel in 30-06. Everybody has them in 308 but nothing in 30-06 so it has to be custom.

Have you checked with E.R. Shaw or Northland Shooter Supply. how about Ahlman's? I don't know for sure about any of these. Just some I have had suggested to me in the past. Also check the savageshooters forum.

I might have a .30-06 reamer. I have a reamer, I've just never measured it to see what it is (came with other stuff).

Word has it ER Shaw is whicked backed up with AR barrels. I could check with a smith(Ahman's) but I would think they would be WAY over the $300 mark. I think it will have to be a place that specializes in Savage Barrels, otherwise the cost will go through the roof in a hurry.

I don't have any idea about where to get the barrel, but when it is done you need to post pics. This sounds like the start of a very cool rifle.

Sharp Shooters Supply can build you one for $365. They aren't fast but they do good work.

For sure, not sure how it will look. It's more of a "working gun" than anything. I will use it for target testing so I want it to be as heavy as possible, heavy barrel, heavy stock and a big a** break.

pac-nor makes a great barrel, you won't be dissapointed if you go that route.

I'd rather have it done right than try and rig something to get it to work.

How do you think the chambers get cut? :P

Twist rate would be the only possible hiccup, but that's not really much issue on something you're just hammering targets with.

Go to Criterion Barrels website criterionbarrels.com. They have the contact information for Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters supply. Their suggested price for a 26 inch barrel is $350. 30-06 is listed as an available chambering.

most of the aftermarket barrel manufacturers are buried in orders. There is a
fellow named Jim Briggs out of Buffalo, MN doing business as Northland Shooters Supply.
You can see his stuff on SavageShooters.com here:
http://www.savageshooters.com/forumdisp ... ers-Supply

CALL him to see what he has in stock that might not be listed on the forum.
Don't email, it will take forever to get a reply.

Do a search for McGowen barrels on one of the search engines. There are a couple of
businesses selling their barrels and they may have something in stock.

If you talk to Ahlman's, they'll likely recommend a Douglas barrel.

Shilen, McGowen, Criterion, Pac-Nor, Lother Walther, Douglas, and others all make
Savage pre-fit barrels (finished, threaded if that's what you want). But given the
current demand its likely that all will be months behind in filling orders.

If you're in a hurry you might call Douglas and see how far behind they are in shipping
orders.

you might contact Stangfish and see if either of the 30/06 barrels he's selling are a
heavy contour:

Jim has new, Savage Factory 22" 30-06 barrels in stock for the unbelievable price of $85.00 if you don't want to wait.
He's a great guy to work with.

ETA: The contour is Sporter weight, which is not what I would consider a Target contour, but hey, the price is right.

You have a lathe, 4d reamers will rent you a reamer and headspace gauge for about $50 shipped.

After that, it's super easy. If you have a spiderhead for your lathe, you are setup. If not, you can do it with a live center, and steady rest pretty easily as well.

Measure your receiver's HS, cut the chamber to match your receiver, screw it all together and you are done.
