best semi auto shotgun for the price

Postby zero on Sat Sep 28, 2013 10:02 am

I'm looking to get a semi auto shotgun and not sure who makes the best one for a good price that won't break the bank. I would really like synthetic stock set but reliability is the main thing.

Duck gun, grouse gun, defense gun, turkey gun - all bring different guns to mind.

I would recommend a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 before I would recommend a Semi-Auto. There are good reasons for that but the first is price point.
The second is Parts and Accessories availability and the associated Cost, this can be daunting at best when you start talking Auto Loaders.
The last is flat out reliability Pumps have been working in Combat and Law Enforcement for quite some time and still working well. I trust my mossberg 500 in a HD situation a lot more than I trust my benelli semi to function when I need it most.

Benelli M2, or maybe a little further down the scale a Remington 11-87 Tactical. Run you around $900-$1300. Going up in price, the Benelli M3 or the M4, which is a hell of a defensive shotgun probably top of the line.

Nothing wrong with pumps in a defensive role, just take more practice. OTOH, they require less maintenance.

I owned a benelli m4 with a pistol grip and ghost ring sights and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. How much do the m2 run? Hahaha yea a saiga 12 would be awesome...can't seem to find them for a reasonable price anynore tho....yea I do love my 870 and it runs like a champ no doubt but auto loaders are pretty much always gonna be faster even if its just a little.

There's a reason the Benelli M2 is by far the most popular shotgun in 3gun competition.......reliability. Do it and don't look back. Rounding up second and third is the Remington Versamax Tactical and the FN SLP.

I shot a couple of rounds of sporting clays with my buddy shooting his M4 with the ghost rings. It was ridiculous. He's never been that good.

Get a used 1100 or 1187 with a rifle sight deer barrel. Done. If you feel the need for more than 4+1 put an extension on it. Invest $37 in a competition master carrier.

Done.

The Mossberg 930 is a great gun, depending on the model they run from under $500 to $800 or so. The basic HD model with 18" barrel and no extra frills should be right around $500. Extra barrels, stocks, and accessories are plentiful and affordable.

Glad someone mentioned it, I picked on up used here and love it... excellent gun, only problem I'm having is finding a short barrel for it.
