I was looking at some kind of beat up rifles at FF in a display case several weeks ago and wondering if one could ever get that gunky looking stuff off of them without a regular parts washing machine. How does one identify a 53 and what does "forced" mean? Thanks

The Poles had a bunch that were converted to 8mm Mauser...but other than that, they were only ever in 7.62x54R when produced.

Now...you factor in some of the calibers done custom (especially by guys on here)... ;)

Nice rifles.

I had a Chinese SKS from about 1964, but sold it a few years back. That was cheap fun, as well.

That sale eventually funded a Garand.

I have one of these too. I shot it for the first time today, in fact. Rings the 225 gong like clockwork. Mine is in no way, shape, or form stock though. I wanted to try my hand at some home gunsmithing and did not want to sacrifice one from mother Russia so a T-53 found its way into the vise. Drilled and tapped the receiver, mounted the scope rail, removed the rear iron sights, worked the trigger, cut the barrel down to 16.25" from the end of the receiver, recrowned, modified and installed a bent bolt kit, dropped it into an ATI stock, and duracoated the entire thing in matte black. Who needs a Ruger Gunscout when you can make your own scout rifle. :D
