Savage 10 barrel swap

Postby Sigfan220 on Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:35 pm

I bought a Model 10 as a donor for a project. It's a 243 now I'm trying to find out what to do with it. Has anyone converted a 308/243 to a 223? It doesn't seem too bad from the videos on youtube. However I can't get all the parts right now. I am also considering going to a 22-250. I see that the 223 takes a new box but can't tell if the 22-250 does. I tried to cycle a few dummies and it didn't seem to like them much, it fed 243's fine though. Are there modifications that can be made to the box to get it to feed better with the 22-250?

Worst case I may just turn it into a 308 and call it a day. My preference is 223, then 22-250 then 308 in that order. I have a Remington donor action in 22-250 anyway so it's not a big deal either way.

While on the topic of Savages has any body put new bottom metal on to take AI mags? If I go 308 this may be something to look into.

22-250 and .308 will be the same mag and bolt face. Just swap the barrel and you'll be GTG. For .223 you'll have to swap the mag and bolt face, but it's a piece of cake.

What kind of bolt release does it have? I wanted to do an ai bottom metal, but bought a model 10 with the newer bolt release before I realized the difference. Not a bid deal to me but can't do the ai with the new bolt release at all.

If you decide to swap to 223 get a bolt head from PT&G, they are higher quality than the factory savage head and a great company to deal with. Could also get your DBM for AI mags from them as well, either with bottom or top bolt release.

They have different body taper which is why I suspect there may be a new box?? The 22-250 just didn't want to feed right.

Interesting - I didn't know they did bottom metal. I was looking at them for bolts but didn't even look at bottom metal. They are pretty cheap. Do you have one? I'd be interested to know how well they work for that price.

After doing some research it appears you are correct. Though the diameter at the shoulder only has .04" difference, the 22-250 has it's own mag.

.243, 7mm-08, .308, .260, 6.5 CM are all the same, 22-250 is the odd man out. How about that, another reason not to like the 22-250 ;)

I have a couple of the Remington 700 pattern dbm's and they are as good as my CDI units.

Everything from ptg is good quality

I Did ,with a lot of help from Don T the exact conversion your talking about,243 to 223,actually a pretty straight forward swap,,If i remember ,you need to change out the Bolt face and internal Magazine ,the rest is a matter of changing out the barrel,, I ordered a Boyds stock and opened up the barrel channel to accept the Varmmit Barrel ,,adjusted the standard trigger to about 3#,,got rid of the cheap plastic trigger guard,,and put a long range scope on it,, it,s a little nose heavy but it,s a bench rifle so who cares

Just an update. I ended up just trading out actions for a 223. The barrel and stock are in. I am having the factory barrel professionally removed right now. They always seem to be harder to get off than you would like. Plus the barrel is good so I want it taken off in good working order.
