AR Info

Postby mmcnx2 on Sun Nov 09, 2008 10:28 am

Lookiong to build a AR and I know little to nothing about them, but I'm very comfortable around a 1911 and although the mechanics are obvisouly different I think I can handle it if someoen were to show me one and tear it down so I could understand the parts.

Anyone willing to do a AR 101 class, I could provide cold refreshments and a pizza!

I'd be interested in this as well.

Not exactly what your looking for, but I have a DVD from Bushmaster on a build of the AR. If anyone wants to borrow it let me know.

I would also be interested in participating in an AR class if one gets put together.

It's not bad at all. You should be able to find anything you need online or in a Bushmaster manual online. Of course I'm just talking about field stripping and cleaning as opposed to anything like removing handguards etc.

http://www.ar15.com.

Where I got the information on building one.

If someone wants, I can have a build session sometime. You will be amazed at how easy it is to put one of these together.

I don't do uppers as I don't have a set of blocks or a vice set-up for putting them together.

Lowers take maybe 20 minutes to put together once you get the springs figured out.

Here is a video I used to learn how to put together lowers. There is also one a little farther down on the page that shows how to field strip an AR.

well I picked up a lower and a jewel two stage trigger, now I'm looking for a 22-24 bull barrel and a low profile upper. Any advice on brands or places to shop?

How long do you want to take to look for one?

the "equipment exchange" on ar15.com is a good place to start.

Check out the exchange.

A lot of those guys are dealers.

Being a rookie at this............ Do you know exactly what comes with their lower parts kit? is it everything you will need to assemble the lower sans stock and pistol grip? Or are there other things the "kit" is lacking?

Thanks

Also, lets say....hypothetically..... I have a stripped lower, and I want to put the rest together in roughly $100 increments. Is there a recommended order in which to buy parts?

LRPK, pretty complete with pistol grip, about $60.
Fixed stock, cost me $20. Collapsable, probably from $40-80.
Upper receiver you can get from Del-tone cheaper than Model 1.

I didn't care to "assemble" my upper as it requires more special tools that I didn't have at the time. In time, I would and plan on though.

magazines and the accessories will end up costing as much as the rifle I am finding out.
