Mossberg MVP Flex 5.56mm 18.5" rifle

Postby PHATSPEED7x on Thu Jul 03, 2014 2:24 pm

Just got this rifle this afternoon. Overall the fit and finish of the rifle is surprisingly good. This is my first Mossberg rifle. I've always been interested in the MVP (Mossberg Varmint Predator) rifles since they came out back in 2011. This one has the Flex exchangeable stock system on it. It came standard with a M4 style collapsible stock, and A2 pistol grip. The barrel is a medium bull barrel with flutes. No muzzle device on this gun, which isn't a big deal. 18.5" in length, 1/9 twist rate which is just fine for the 50-69 grain bullets I like to shoot. I decided to top the rifle off with a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 scope.

I zeroed the scope at 50 yards using XM193 5.56 ammo. My three shot groups are just under .5" which is better than I though I'd get with the ammo. The gun also works with PMAGS. But the follower is a little too tall when the magazine is empty so the bolt won't close. No issues with the steel G.I. magazines though. So that's great news!

Overall I'm happy with the rifle. Should be a nice shooter.

I'm a big fan of this platform even though I have one of the earlier 24" varmint models that is more picky about magazines which I actually fault on the PMAG's for using a taller than USGI standard rear rib on the magazines.

For $500-$550ish you're getting a MOA capable bolt action rifle in 5.56 NATO/.223 or .308 with a variety of barrel/stock configurations with a decent 2-stage (user adjustable trigger) that uses widely available and inexpensive detachable magazines, plus Remington 700 short action scope base compatibility. The bolt throw smooths out greatly after 300 rounds and is at least as good as all of the Savage model 10 variations I've owned/fired.

Congrats on the new rifle, if you want to update the bolt handle I noticed this guy on eBay selling the service with knob included for $55 : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mossberg-MVP-Ta ... 2ed2fbd95f

That looks sweet. Been looking for a bolt 308 with a 10 round mag. Will have to consider mossberg.

I would like to see one of their .308 bolt guns in person. It seems like it would be a good shooter.

The 18" predator (laminate stock) variant in .308 runs $520 at Bud's:

... I had not realized this variation of rifle is designed to be compatible with both standard M14/M1a magazines AND SR25/AR10 type (Magpul, etc..).

They are one of the best under rated rifles out there right now. Most people hear Mossberg and think 500 shotgun. This has quickly become one of my favorite rifles in my collection.

Well I left a nice review on Vortex website praising their Crossfire II rifle scope. They emailed me today and they are sending me out some free swag as a thank you. Great company. Great product. Great service.

My nephew's wife shot the rifle over the weekend and she really liked it. She had never shot a bolt action rifle before but after a few shots she was loving it.

Just got the latest issue of American Rifleman, and they did a wonderful review on this series of rifles from Mossberg. I want one of the patrol rifles chambered in 7.62 NATO now.

Take a look at the Tikka T3 CTR. It runs the Sako TRG-22 mags, which have 10 rd capacities. $948, and it is reported to be sub-MOA. Rifles are supposed to start shipping this week.
