Working a Bolt Action Lefty Style

Postby Smith Sights on Sat Jul 12, 2014 6:37 pm

Hi Folks,

I was asked on another board about sling positions and how do I work the bolt action on a rifle, anyway, without dismounting from my shoulder? I took pics and figured I'd post them here as well in the hopes it might help someone.

I hope this was informative. A lefty bolt is nice, but not necessary, and the lefty need not suffer due to a bolt action on the wrong side!

I've just used my right hand to run the bolt. I do everything I can to keep my left hand on fire control. I also train with right handed firearms because that's what there is a majority of and if **** hit the fan and there were just weapons laying about... I would want to be effective with what I have.

I do agree to a point, Phatspeed.

I like to know how to run righty guns left-handed, but I do prefer lefty guns or righty guns which can be easily worked lefty.

The one I will never touch again is the AR platform prior to the brass deflector. I had the opportunity to shoot one of those on full auto and a piece of brass hit me in the cheek below the glasses and gave me a nice shiner.

Have you noticed how the action handle is on the left side of Hi-Point carbines? I like that concept and wish more manufacturers would adopt it. The Hi-Point is a surprisingly good carbine for its price point and for the rounds it shoots, but I'd like to see intermediate rifle cartridges in a platform similar in setup to the Hi-Point's operation.

Just some random thoughts there!

Josh

Might be easier to operate a Mosin that way due to the bolt handle and knob sticking out 90° to the rifle.

Most other bolt guns have the bolt handle angled down making it a fair reach to operate with the left hand. If there is a scope mounted then forget about that technique.
