3 gun shotgun opinions

Postby Scratch on Sat Oct 04, 2014 5:32 pm

Hey you 3 gunners out there... I'm looking for some opinions on a shotgun. I'm thinking either the Benelli M2 or the Remington Versamax. I like the Benelli because it's a lighter gun and I think their inertia system may be more reliable...

But I like the larger loading port of the Versamax and am also thinking the extra weight of the Versamax might be better for felt recoil.

I'm seriously considering picking up one of the Remington Versamax Competition Tactical.
It already has a factory "welded" lifter, an 8+1 tube with a 10+1 extension, oversized bolt Handle, safety and charging button. And I like the adjustable comb height, and QD mounts too.

What's the overall consensus of this gun?

Well I have only competed in 1 3 gun match and I used 870 for part but due to bad luck I was allowed to use my buddies versamax.

I can attest that the versa is a dang fine choice. I know of a few people that switched from a m2 to the versa max. Several people have told me the m2 kinda kicks like a mule.

Just .2 cents.

However next one I do will yet again be with a 870. The trusty boat ore
Some say that he lives in a tree, and that his sweat can be used to clean precious metals... all we know is, he's called the Stig.

My only concern with the versa max is that it is over-bored and there doesn't really seem to be a consensus on how well it will shoot slugs. Otherwise I think it looks like a very nice option. I have looked long and hard and found a few people saying it shoots slug well enough but nothing really definitive. Though I am probably the only one that seems to have this concern.

I shot an M2 and Versamax Tactical side-by-side to help narrow down that choice for myself. I ended up going with the M2. The Versamax was noticeably softer shooting, but also noticeably heavier - I was able to swing and hit targets with the M2 faster because it was lighter.
I don't feel like the additional felt recoil on the M2 is a significant hindrance. I've done a couple FLSC tactical shotgun matches (shotgun only) with my M2 and did not feel beat up at all by the end of the day - and I'm 5'4".
As far as reliability goes, you still see a lot more of the serious 3-gun guys using Benelli's versus any other models/brands - the consensus seems to be that the Benelli inertia guns are still the most reliable option. Personally, mine runs like a champ with little maintenance. It had about 1000 rounds through it before the last time I cleaned it (got used by myself and 2 other people) and had zero issues.

On the downside, it definitely does cost more to get an M2 decked out for competition. It's probably at least $150-300 more than what the Versamax Competition costs out of the box to get an extended mag tube, beveled loading port, better fiber sight, welded lifter, and a better bolt release and charging handle for the M2. On the flip side, you get to pick things out and get EXACTLY what you want when you customize an M2 like that - bigger mag tube if you want it (a lot of people are going with the 12 round tubes for 3-gun), more aggressive loading port modification if you want it, specific style of bolt release and charging handle, etc.

If you do go the M2 route, I've found that these guys do good work and have some of the best pricing for the typical mods (I sent my own gun and several shop guns to them): http://www.hawkeyeordnance.com/

M2 all the way. There's a forum member here selling one for like $900 right now that already has a Nordic mag extension on it.

Even the versamax competition tactical is not ready to go outside of the box, it will need work to make it quad load ready.

If you go the versa max route... I'd just buy a tactical, or bone stock version, and send it off to get it done up correctly.. otherwise you won't get what you want.

If you are leaning toward the m2, take a good long look at the stoeger m3000... I've heard very good things from other competitors... it uses the same inertia system as the m2.

http://moaprecision.com/ will sell you a fully kitted out ready to go stoeger m3k for around 850. Otherwise I'd look for a used m2.

Yeah 600.00 is a great price on that M2 that guy is selling, especially when it comes with all those accessories like sling, ammo, 3 gun cart, shot shell holders, bandolier, belt, coffee maker, cheeseburger and fries, etc...

I sure am glad that guy posted that in the for sale section....
