Savage Axis .223 - magazine falls out when firing

Postby purd0027 on Sun Jun 28, 2015 8:48 pm

I bought a Savage Axis XP in .223. When I fire it the magazine seems to become disconnected so when I operate the bolt a new round doesn't feed. I am new to rifles. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem with their Axis?

Savage Axis .223 - magazine falls out when firing

Are you smacking it in well? I have the next level up Savage and it takes a very firm push to seat.

After you seat the magazine and with bolt open - push down on magazine from inside and see if it falls out.

Just some ideas...

I have an Axis in .223. With the bolt closed it can be a bit picky on how the mag goes in. Make sure you put the butt end in 1st and you hear it click when fully in. Its a lot easier with it open I find.

Seat the mag with the bolt open. Give the mag a good slap when you seat it.

I have an Axis in .223 as well. Two possibilities.

1. You're not pressing the magazine in hard enough. Turn the rifle over once, (chamber empty, of course) with mag empty and bolt open. Press the magazine in, rear first and then press the front of the mag in until you hear and see the magazine latch/lever snap and lock in to place. Get a good feel for what it looks and feels like.

2. Make sure the small spring clip on the rear of the magazine is in place and not broken off. I HAVE actully broken this little clip off during a P-dog hunt last year in SD. I only had one magazine and if the spring clip is broken off, the mag will not stay inserted. This spring clip is not replaceable.

If in doubt, go to a gun shop and compare your mag to a new one.

Yes, that looks fine. The spring retainer I was referring to is on the right side, at the top of the magazine pictured.

When I broke my .223 Axis magazine, it broke right at the top where it's folded over and, of course, this is where it flexes ever time it's inserted.

Well, I bought a new factory magazine and now it works fine. Kinda a bummer the one that the rifle came with new was faulty.
