I do not take it personally… I don't own a .308. I'm simply asking why. Why would one buy souch a caliber.

For the same reason the .308 was developed. Someone took a .300 savage case and said what else can I do with this.

Or someone who wants a .45-70 in an AR.

The .45 Raptor is interesting in that it's a new cartridge made with feasibility in mind. It's essentially a rimless version of the .460 S&W Magnum, so all those folks that wanted to know what that whopper of a wheelgun cartridge would do in a carbine will not only know that but also how it feels in an AR platform. If you get the brass, you can use a .308 shell holder with .460 S&W dies to reload it, and it uses the .460 S&W bullets and reloading data. Maybe if you know how to form brass you could use .308 brass for it, but I don't know.

I guess it's a wait-and-see thing. A lot of cartridges have come and gone. Some were great but just couldn't get market penetration. It's hard to find a niche when so many old established cartridges are "good enough" and far for affordable.

Been reloading 308 for about 2 years now. Its an interesting caliber and works on the AR10 platform, which I have. Would like to shoot one though before investing.

If you are going with an AR10 platform why not just use a well designed factory cartridge in .308 Win. using monolithic bullets to maximize penetration as a baseline for comparison to either your own hand-loads or any of the other cartridge choices mentioned previously to decide if it's worth the investment in a new upper and reloading components?

Example:

http://www.hornady.com/store/308-Win-16 ... rformance/

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)

MUZZLE | 100 | 200 | 300 | 400 | 500
2750/2770 | 2549/2380 | 2357/2035 | 2173/1730 | 1998/1462 | 1831/1228

.. Or you could pick up an inexpensive 30-06 and pair it with the 180 grain GMX Superperformance ammunition:

2820/3178 | 2632/2768 | 2451/2401

Been shooting 178 Hornady bullets out of my savage bolt. Just picked up some 200 and 208 gr XLD's to try. But for my semi which is a short barrel 308, the heavier bullets don't shoot to well. Tried 180 gr but not the greatest. When you have owned a 50 BMG, kind of miss big boomers. Don't miss the cost of reloading though.
