Varmint/predator rifle hand guard

Postby patrick on Fri Mar 18, 2016 11:37 pm

So I've been posting about building a varmint/predator rifle.Well I finally got it done and was ready to go test fire it tomorrow and the DPMS free float tube on it fell apart in my hands and it won't screw back together. So the question is what hand guard can I use?I originally got the UTG SS hand guard but the barrel nut would not fit over the barrel. What do I do now?

Are you using the barrel nut that came with the hand guard?
Hard to tell from photo, threads on hand guard and nut stripped?
Hopefully, you ignored instructions to loctite nut in place?

Most UTG nuts require barrel less than 1", so no real surprise that didn't work for you.

There are quality handguard manufacturers out there. I would spend a little more and buy from one of them.
SLR
Noveske
Bravo Company
Seekings
Troy / VTAC

Call Nordic Components. Homegrown Minnesota company that has
a good rep. They have parts including handguards.

Nothing wrong with young products, however why not just bore out the inside of the nut(UTG?) that you already have so it fits over your barrel?

If this is for a varmint-predator rifle, I regret to tell you that you are most likely going to hate the full quad rail. They feel like a cheese grater in the hands, are heavy and don't ride in a front rest for damn. Your best affordable option would have been the handguard from Nordic Components.

You planing on putting a bipod on the sides and top of your handguard as well? Also to mount a Harris type bipod on a quadrail requires an a adapter that actually makes a Harris type bipod work kinda crappy since it cant lay flat against the tube.

Nordic Components NC-1 13.25 ounce.
DPMS rifle length free float tube 13.8 ounce.
YHM lightweight quad rail 14.75 ounce.

Certainly not enough difference to worry about.
