Used market for 10/22?

Postby homestead on Sat Mar 26, 2016 5:00 pm

Hi all,

I am looking for a used 10/22 as I've heard some of the manufacturing quality used to be quite a bit better, but I don't see them on the used market very much. Does anyone have one you'd be willing to part with?

We'd be using this for, well, all the things a 10/22 is useful for. But also I'd like something our older kids (7 and 9, one leftie) can use for training.

Cheers!

Some people think the aluminum receivers were better. The new ones are polymer and my opinion are just as good as the metal ones.

The 10/22 takedowns are a nice idea if you are using the iron sights which are mounted on the barrel. I wonder about barrel alignment if you use an optic with them since they are usually mounted on the receiver.

New receivers are polymer? Have not seen any of those yet.

Used market for 10/22?

Mine was purchased new 4-5 years ago and has an aluminum receiver. If those were plastic, how would they tap them for mounting a scope?

Edit: googled a bit... Are you talking about trigger assembly being plastic - mine definitely is

Trigger group was switched to plastic. If you have a plastic receiver, it's probably rare and worth a lot.

It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Trigger group housing is polymer. The receiver is still aluminum.

10-22's are pretty hard to come by on the used market, but they can be had. Best bet is sites like Gunbroker, or occasionally you'll find them in smaller gun shops and pawn shops.

This thread reminds me that I need to find another 10/22 receiver. I have all the other parts to assemble #4.

Maybe contact a local gun shop and let them know you are looking. Just happened to be at my local gun shop in Forest Lake when someone traded one in. Normally they put stuff on gun broker, but timed it right. Needed one to train my kids as well.

I've seen at least a dozen private party 10/22's show up on Armslist in the last few days - and I'm not even looking. It would appear they go fast though.

Throw out a WTB on there and see what you reel in.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

I have a newer polymer trigger guard carbine version and a couple of old versions. The newer version seems to shoot and function just as well as the old one. I thought the polymer trigger guard version would be pretty crappy, but I don't notice a huge difference. I've also shot a takedown with the Ruger BX trigger and for the money, not a bad way to go. With all the upgrades available for a 10-22, I would just buy a new one and go shoot. For the same money, a new one gets you an unmolested one that hasn't been cleaned carelessly or who knows what else. I would guess that it won't take you long before you'll want to upgrade anyways. Good luck!

thanks for all the great suggestions! I have been trolling armslist and I do see some popping up from time to time. I have been meaning to check out thunderjohn's shop so if I make it down there I may just grab a new one from him.

You should probably go talk to him before you spend a lot of time looking. John has been more than fair with me, and you might find that a price for a new 10/22 will be as good, and possibly better, than a used one (if you can find one). John and his wife are truly great people, too.

I think there was a period when they were expanding manufacturing that was not as good. I've bought two in the past few years. One of them ended up having overtravel on the firing pin so the breech face peened quickly. Took it back to my dealer who shipped it off to Ruger for me. They replaced the barrel and the firing pin and even returned it with a free magazine. In short my advice is don't worry about buying a new one because even if you have a problem with it Ruger will make it right.
