Besides that, everybody knows you need a M14 to survive TEOTWAWKI.
I will never apologize for being an American.

You know how you can tell who hasn't been in combat in a desert and actually used both (or either) hard?

(hint: they believe the bull about the AK pattern rifles being super reliable and awesome)

I'll still take a radio and a bolt though. YMMV

SBR it!

Talk about not helping yourself with a jury - half the folks that shoot don't get those yet alone 12 total strangers that get called up. Also would guess your stamp might be in limbo while the whole mess is sorted out.

How is the stamp in limbo? If you have the stamp it is a legal SBR. Any self defense situation is going to have its own specific issues I am sure.

Does in my car in the parking lot count?

I'm an equal opportunity shooter. I have both in my truck.

It does not.

What if it is in stripper clips and a bandolier over my shoulder while I pick up eggs and milk?

How many times do I have to explain the Cub Foods rule? If you didn't buy it at Cub Foods From Cub Foods, it does not count.

Mine was the M16A1 for 12 years.

Why just restrict yourself to the AK or the AR?

Why compare the 5.56 AR to the 7.62 AKM?

Why not a 7.62 AR?

If you are worried about parts availability I would think that any gunshop would have a stock of Rem 870/1100 parts or Mossberg 500 stuff. 12 gauge would be a bit more available than either 5.56 or 7.62 x 39.

Air Force engineer. What did nutnfancy do in the chair force?

Probably a few more, I seem to be unable to grasp this concept :)

...in a time of disaster or urban unrest.

So when SHTF you would trade your firearm that there is a plethora of parts around for and an abundance of ammo for one that has neither?

Sounds like a tacticool armchair warrior to me. There was nothing he said that wasn't "conventional wisdom" since Vietnam, and it's already been pointed out that comparing a 5.56 rifle against a 7.62 rifle is a pretty bogus argument to begin with. You want to make a valid HISTORICAL comparison, compare the AK-47 against the Garand M1. And in this case, the 7.62 x 39 is the weak sister against the 30-06 (7.62x63!) This whole argument sounds like a big pile of Russstra to me...

When the SHTF, you won't need a lot of ammo. If you do, you're doing it wrong and will be dead soon anyhow. ;)

Nutnfancy is the guy that dremeled a gas port on a LaRue rifle and then blamed LaRue in a YouTube video for it not cycling properly.

I am interested in your thoughts. Seems like you are saying that neither is superior. Can you elaborate on your opinions as someone who has actual field experience with both?

I've always thought the same thing. If a person is getting into enough firefights to go through thousands (or tens of thousands) of rounds of ammo, your luck will run out and a bullet will find you. Best to maintain a low profile and avoid trouble.

The AR is fine if you keep a mag in and the dust cover closed.

I was a Marine, so no M4 mag dumps, and rifle length.

The AK is a tool designed to be made and used by the lowest common denominator. It didn't have any magical properties that made it more reliable, and it damn sure isn't accurate at medium to long range.

Our special operations forces use an AR. They don't use it because it sucks.
