Rifle Stock Painting or Dipping

Postby BigDog58 on Sat Feb 11, 2017 12:50 am

Does anyone know a local Gunsmith, Auto or Motorcycle Shop that does custom Stock Painting or Dipping? I am thinking of having a Manners Carbon Fiber Stock refinished. I painted it myself last year but without proper facilities and equipment, it did not come out as well as I hoped. I met a guy at a gun show last year that performed stock dipping, but I cannot find his business card. I'm hoping to find a local custom paint shop (Auto or Cycle) or a good GS that can get this done for me.

It makes me long for the days I worked at the Local Major Airline (Pre-Delta), because I worked in and had access to great paint booths and equipment.

Rifle Stock Painting or Dipping

For Hydrodipping stocks, I've always used Waldochs up by Forest Lake. They are used to dipping rims and car parts so their tanks are way bigger than any gun stock. Their materials hold up to weather and rocks on a rim of a truck so I've never had any issue with quality. Plus they charge by size- so it's usually cheaper than most of the gun dippers.

What'd that cost to have done?

Is that dipped or painted?

How has it held up?

It looks great.

Dipped and clear coated with paint is the usual procedure. JJ's got some dipping done on AR's that looks great too. Maybe search his posts for that one.

If you don't mind sharing your results, I'm considering doing this to a stock so I would like to see results. I'm debating on painting myself, or dipping.

I have not yet had anything done. I will most likely get it done over the winter, after I tear down my rifle for maintenance and possibly a modification or two.
