Where to get a decent quality .223 upper for prairie dogs

Postby brad3579 on Sat Apr 01, 2017 10:52 am

Just got back from Montana shooting prairie dogs and would like to buy or put together a better upper.
I have been reading info on the internet but the opinions seem to be all over the place as far as what twist and
length works the best, I am planning on using 50gr V Max bullets.
What twist, maybe 1/8 to 1/10?
What length, maybe 20" to 24"?
What brands White Oak, Larue etc?
Wylde yes or no?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The 1/8 BCM SS410 16" is my most accurate AR. They have longer SS barrels, but these are not lightweights and does 50 grain gain much if anything with more length?

All SS410 uppers: https://www.bravocompanyusa.com/searchr ... er&Submit=

My barrel. Cheaper option available.

P.S. My old eyes are terrible so accuracy claims are relative. Any young average shooter will best me these days.

D-tech in Bemidji. My 223 upper shoots 1/2 to 1/4 moa. Long wait but nothing but good reviews. Doing ladder test at 200yds, I had 16 bullets in 2" group. 50vmax at min to max charge weight using accurate 2015.

You can call the owner, he will tell you which upper is best for your needs.

Twist rate is going to depend on what Bullets you want to run. I think a 1:10 covers what most guys would want to use. Length depends on how much velocity and weight you want. I tend to go shorter as I keep the shots close. Dtech is my uncle so obviously I run his stuff. Accuracy is very good. I don't know why you would want a wylde chamber for prairie dogs. I would go with 223 match.

Shoot him a call or email. He has more help now and lead times are pretty reasonable these days. I'm probably going to order a 6DTI for Coyote, should be sweet with 70gr varmint bullets!!

I have 2 for sale, 1-used, 1-new.

Details to follow.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DPMS 16" very heavy bull LoPro Classic http://www.dpmsinc.com/LO-PRO-CLASSIC_ep_137-1.html

never fired - complete

currently has a 8-24 X 50 with adjustable objective in a AR-Stoner scope mount

Also available with a complete Lower (not DPMS)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Other upper is a 24" fluted barrel = used.

I haven't loaded for it much but it seems to like lighter projectiles.

Nice upper - just not for me - its a Safe Queen.

If you seriously want to kill, not just “shoot at” , prairie dogs, I’d leave the AR home. A 2” group doesn’t quite hack it if you’re into body count. An AR is great for blasting a lot of ammo on pop cans at the quarry, unless you want to spend over a grand. If you want invest in a trip to Montana, think about building a specialized dog gun. Here in Oregon we have a miniature version called the Belding Ground Squirrel, ( called “squeaks” for short). About half the size of the prairie dog, basically ping-pong ball size head. There are not millions - there are billions. Alfalfa farmers hate them. We shoot suppressed, average over 1000 rounds apiece a day. I’m killing at 90% with my PAC-NOR barreled .20 Vartarg. Barrel cost $500, and the receiver of your choice. Just my opinion, but I’ve tried most everything in 60 some years hunting and the VT is the most accurate thing I’ve ever had. Poor man’s .204 -3650 w. 14.5 Lil Gun and 34 gr Midsouth Dogtown.

Too funny, I finally got around to calling D-Tech this morning and talked to Matt.
Ordered a 22" match grade barrel with 1:14 twist and integral compensator, should be fun.

45 to 53 grain projectiles at a high rate with a 1:14 twist (old 222REM target combination)
