50 BMG @ 200 yds. Bullets seem to yaw into target.

Postby warrlac on Sun Jul 16, 2017 9:35 pm

Hi --

Wondering if anyone else who has experience with this caliber can comment...

Is this a normal target for a close range shot with the 50 BMG or do I potentially have a problem with my rifle/ammo? The barrel is 32 inches and the Steyr has a large muzzle brake.

Thanks,
Warren L.

That paper does not look torn on the pictures. Looks like the top layer is peeled. Turn the target upside down next time and see if the peeling shifts to the right side :)

Cool rifle!!!

Your pictures don't show any evidence of yaw nor wobble. As was said above, your targets look to be shedding the top portion of the paper, but the holes appear round. Try taking a caliper and measure the actual hole dimension. You should get .510" in the actual hole.

You might also try shooting blank paper to see if this anomaly occurs on paper without the black top printed portion (the targets now have). I shoot solid brass bullets, and their holes look the same as my other calibers, only larger.

Have you tried shooting at longer distances and see those results?

The bullet holes look round to me. With how long the 50 is, if it was not going nose on, you should see fairly oblong oval holes.

That being said, 200 is a bit close to see much with a 50.

Posting to follow but my two favorite things so far are. 660 grains and 200 yards being too close to tell.

Is it possible that your target was turned slightly one direction? Ie - not perpendicular to your line of fire?

Try shooting a thicker target next time. Like cardboard.

Is that a 3 shot group there at 200 yards?

I have been shooting a Steyr HS50 at 200 yds with 660 grain ammo (some M33, some WC860 215 grain) and have noticed that the bullet holes all tear to the LH side. They don't look like the straight-in holes my 30 cal. makes, but perhaps the larger 50 cal. high velocity bullet is simply grabbing more of the paper as is goes through?

Wondering if anyone else who has experience with this caliber can comment...

You might also contact OldmanFCSA. He can help you load more accurate 50 BMG ammo. Your gun is very capable of shooting good groups. Below, is an example at 1000 yds. Had I read the wind better, shot #2 would not have been out in the 7 ring. Shots 1-3&5 were all touching. These were with 800 gr Borerider's pushed by Reloader 50. He has taught me more about loading for a 50, than I could have learned on my own in 10 years. I'll also be glad to help any way I can.

Sorry Guys - I've been rather "busy" lately with 2 weeks of hospital stay, 2 weeks of nursing home stay, 3 weeks of PT at local hospital, with a possible mis-diagnose of knee being the main issue, and a MRI soon which will help diagnose the real problem.

I have many suggestions for you, but the first one easy to complete is GLUE the target to the cardboard backing so an accurate diagnose of your problem can be completed.

Nice rifle, but the metrics of it would bother me a bit.
What scope are you using?
Amount of MOA Slope on base?
Trigger pull Weight?

Are you planning on reloading for it?
What equipment are you using?
What accessories have you obtained for reloading, if any?

Where have you been shooting?
