Without shims its about 45°off. 45 ft lbs wouldn't do it.

Why would it be different? Weaker metal is the upper, not the nut.

I’ve read of people torquing barrel nuts to 120 and then stripping the wrench off the nut. But, I also read about one of these nuts stripping much lower and needed to be removed with a pipe wrench and cheater.

I’m glad I don’t use barrel nuts that require indexing anymore.

Not that it matters for the OP, but Aero Precision's Enhanced uppers use a male threaded barrel nut with no need to index anything because the hole for the gas tube and holes for the handguard screws are machined into the upper itself. Makes things quite easy... Just torque to spec and you're done.

I don't know why its 45 ft lbs max, unless they engineered the nut threads to fail before the threads on your upper?

But the upper spec is 30-80 so it just does not make much sense that it would fail at 45.

I got sheets of .001 and .002, you’d need to cut it to the right size. Can bring some to the range some time in the weekend (if it don’t snow).
Edit: I must be confused, I thought you were west of the twin cities. I can mail you some too.

Aero said 55 to 60 is OK if I go slow
I gave up on this upper and got their enhanced that has the handguard attachment separate from the barrel nut
I'll use their regular upper for my next build.
I ordered more shims, but I don't like the idea of having 12 or 13 shims stacked up in there.
