AR accuracy

Postby Stradawhovious on Mon Jan 26, 2009 1:34 pm

I have become obsessed with getting smaller and smaller groups at the rage with my long guns lately, and have a quick question for all you AR fans out there. I have a DPMS M4 style upper with the 16" 1:9 rh twist barrel. Is it reasonable to expect close to MOA accuracy with this setup under the right circumstances and with the right finger on the trigger (I understand that there are variables to be considered, and I will have to play with different cartridges) I am going to be putting a decent piece of glass on this beast in the near future. Is it possible to get reasonable groups with this thing, or should I just respect it for the bullet hose that it is.

I think that it is a very cpapble rifle and I think also that you could expect close to MOA groups. DPMS Rifles can be exceptionally accurate - even in battle dress.

Depends on how you shoot the groups. A light contour barrel will heat up and the groups will open up a little with that. There's a reason match barrels are bigger and stiffer than light barrels.

That said, the AR is an inherently accurate platform. With the right ammo, and a decent trigger, you should be shooting close to MOA.

No matter how accurate the rifle is, you won't get good groups if the trigger is really heavy unless you have some serious trigger-control skills.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

easy way to figure it out, get HammAR to shoot it for you, then try to beat that.

Really? You need an explaination? OK, how's this.

hammAR - 100+ years experience handling a rifle and USMC training in how to use it, the best damn training on earth according to every Marine I have ever talked to

Strad - 6 months experience handling a rifle, only training is what I can leech off of those on this forum, and pester people into giving me at the range.

I'm getting better....... Pretty good even, but I doubt I will ever be Marine good.

Good 'nuff? :D

My older AP4 has shot many sub MOA groups. Its been a while since I've set up to shoot groups with that barrel.

Is yours chrome lined?
