Mossberg youth bantam and mini bantam shotguns.

I would like to buy one of those 2 models for my son. He is 9 1/2 years old. He was able to try an older model 20 gauge for size, but not able to shoot it. The 20 gauge models are hard to find right now, but the .410 bore is available. I think the 20 is too much for him, but the .410 is a hit it or miss it completely situation. Who has a 20 gauge or a .410 for their kid and how do they like it?

The 20 mini is a real handful for recoil. We had a very small 7th grader who tried one for trap last season. It is just so light that there is nothing to absorb recoil. We ended up filling the hollow butt with lead shot and having him use reduced recoil loads to make it manageable. Then he grew a foot between seasons and while he is still rail thin his arms fit a full size 12 now which believe it or not has less perceived recoil for him.

What about 28ga? If an over/under works there are several 26" models out there for around $500. You would have to spend a few more $$$ to shorten the stock. Realize that probably doubles your current budget though. Browning used to make a 28ga BPS Micro Midas but they seem hard to come by.
