I want to borrow a 308 for a few shots

Postby Grayskies on Thu Oct 08, 2020 7:41 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading from a 270 to a 308, I’m not sure if my shoulder can handle a 308 or not. I’m wondering if someone might loan me a 308 at a range for a few shots, I’m willing to trade some time on my 270 or? My ammo (if I can find it, what the hell happened the Zombie apocalypse and I missed it? ) or yours.

Seriously, there's more toilet paper at my Walmart than ammo at anyplace I been!

Sorry if this is posted in a wrong forum, I’m sure a Mod will shift it.

Have a Blessed Day :D

I have a .308 AR you're welcome to try out. I'm probably not very close to you though... down by Hutchinson.

I haven't shot it for a while so my memory may be rusty, but I'd say the .308 is less than a 12 gauge in recoil and way less than a .300 Win Mag.

I have a rem 700 in .308 and could probably be talked into meeting at Oakdale some evening.

PM me if that is of interest

You aren't going to see much, if any, difference in recoil between a 270 and 308 - they are pretty comparable in that regard. There might be a slight difference when comparing 150 gr loadings but it would be fairly minute. I shoot both regularly and I have seen nothing to convince me to choose one cartridge over the other other other than what ammo I have on hand and which rifle I wish to shoot

For less recoil one will need to use a combination of lighter bullet, less velocity, and heavier gun weight. This is the reason for being regarding the 243 Winchester as it combines light recoil with adequate performance on deer sized animals. The 6.5 Creedmore is a similar round which appeals to those preferring a larger diameter and heavier bullet. The 260 and 7mm/08 Remington cartridges are also touted as low recoiling with the 260 being similar but less common and more expensive as the 6.5 CM and the 7mm/08 being only slightly less than the 308.

As an option using what you already have, try using the 270 Win low recoil ammo by Hornady, HSM, or Remington (if the latter can still be found). It is more than adequate for most deer hunting in MN.

Yep, Hornady Custom Lite in .243 is what my son uses.

Handloading the .270 or .308 for some lighter loads might help as well.

If you cannot get ammo for a new caliber, why spend the money on something you cannot shoot. I live by st cloud and will help you out if you want. If you live in the country, or we can find a place to shoot instead of paying range fees, I'll offer my help. Savage 308 with a 24 inch barrel. I shoot 200 gr bullets out of it. Let me know.
