Dumb question: silicon in receiver holes as 'filler' ?

Postby Bergie on Fri Dec 04, 2020 9:02 am

I was brainstorming after a bourbon last night and here's that thought: I bought a Tikka T3 this last summer pretty cheap, so I didn't care that the mount/receiver screws were missing; I'm scoping it anyway. But- there's six tiny holes and only four are used for my DNZ mount. I've had moisture=rust get in under some other rifle's mounts so I was thinking why not put a small dab of silicon caulk in the Tikka holes that are empty....it'd keep water out/be removable when needed/and isn't expensive. Was the bourbon making me smarter? Or.....?

Why not just use set screws that are normally used as fillers? With the silicon, if you ever do need to use those holes, you will have fun cleaning out the filler material.

I will blame the absent of thought of set screws on Evan Williams. He can be so dumb sometimes!

There is your problem. Should have upgraded the bourbon a bit.

If you are planning to use silicone, I would say a bead under the edges of the base is better than filling the holes. Kind of like you would do when installing a new faucet.

And I agree with above, Elijah Craig is a better advisor :)

A buddy of mine just dropped off a bottle of Jack. He BOUGHT a barrel from the distillery and -as per the MN laws- they emptied his selected barrel into bottles in order to deliver it. Think of all the good ideas just waiting to well up from that brain-storming session!
