300 PRC question for you Pro's

Postby Bearcatrp on Sat Dec 12, 2020 4:01 pm

Been kind of contemplating this caliber for a bit. As usual, I do my research to see if any benefit from what I have. Have own 50BMG, couple of 338LM and I reload. Old Man taught me! Been looking at reload data from Hodgdons web site. Based on a 200 gr bullet, doesn't seem much more fps than my 308, only a couple hundred. Hodgdon web site shows for 308 max 2502 fps with a certain powder. I am using RL17 getting 2694 fps last time I checked with my lab radar. A little hot but no pressure signs. Now from looking at different makers for the 300 PRC, am seeing 1:8 to 1:75 twists whereas my 308 and allot of others are 1:10 twist. To me, it doesn't seem worth it but maybe I am missing something. Reason why I am posting this. Have looked at the difference in powders and case lengths. Heck, the 30-06 is close to case length. I miss my 338LM I sold to old man but the recoil was to much given my multiple back surgeries. Makes me wonder if the 308 or 30-06 can change the twist rate like the PRC and come real close or better. Since Hornady signed the contract to supply the military with 300 PRC ammo, there is none to get, just like the 300BO sub 190's they are supplying to the military. Dried up! Posting my pics of reload date I have so far come across.

What do you want to do with it? Looks like it holds 20 more grains of H1000 than a .30-06, and gains 400 FPS. That’s a pretty significant increase in performance. Seems pretty similar to a .300 WM, and it’ll definitely recoil like a magnum with 80 grains of powder and 200 grain bullets. Probably not a ton of fun to shoot a lot of.

Do with it? Sounds to me like the perfect platform to launch 30 caliber bullets to 800, 900, even 1000 yards.

Can already do this with my 308.

Possibly beyond 1000 yards shooting. Being a magnum it’s probably to much recoil to go back to. My savage 338LM punished my shoulder after 10 rounds. The RPR 338LM, being heavier, aloud me to shoot 30 rounds before shoulder fatigue sat in. Still messed with my back though. This is just a dream at the moment, checking stuff out. Thanks for the replies.

A joke amongst friends:

a 308 will hit a wall at 800 yards, fall out of the sky, and have to tumble the rest of the way to 1000 yards.

With a RPR Magnum, you can switch barrels and bolt-head between cartridges with a GO gage and a couple of wrenches.

Did you ever try or research a 280 AI ??? Less recoil, 185/195 max weight, 1:8.5 twist, and have fun with lighter loads.

Wanna buy a 25-06Rem ??? I'm getting 3372 fps with 115 grain Nosler BT's (and might go higher with WS2).

That’s true, but if you do it just right, you can sometimes make them tumble right into the middle part of the target. ;)

What I don’t get is the advantage of the .300 PRC over a .300 Win Mag. The difference in accuracy between a short action and a long action is really only noticeable for the best shots under certain conditions. Bolt throw? I don’t think a eighth of an inch means much. Then again, I use a .416 Rigby a lot and I haven’t had issues with that bolt throw, either.

I’ve used a .300 RUM which is a step up over a .300 Win for a bunch of hunts where I wanted Max PBR. In reality, I probably would have had no difference with a .300 win mag on game, and the shots were all under 300 yards, so a .30-06 would have done the same thing.

A .300 WM with suppressor or a good brake is less a handful than a lightweight .308 (like a Steyr Scout) with conventional hunting loads.

I guess a .300 PRC sounds “cooler” than a .300 Win Mag or .300 WSM.

For hunting, no real difference in performance.

Paper? It’s a bit flatter, but is it worth the $$$.

Folks like Erud are going to hit things at 800 with a .308 better than I will at that distance with my .300. It’s the Indian, not the arrow.

One little side note- the .300 bullet quoted is the Swift A Frame, which is a bit more pressure inducing than the other choices. I can’t get quite the top velocities with it that I can with others- but it’s still what I use in hunting .300’s. It hold up to 3500 FPS Impact velocities unlike a lot of others.

Whoa, where have you been hiding out for the last 4 years or so? I’ve been looking for someone to arm-wrestle. :?

Funny joke. Have you switched barrels on that RPR? I miss that sweet rifle. I did look at the 280 AI shortly after selling you the RPR. Forgot about that caliber. Will Have to take another look. With almost zero compontents for reloading any caliber, won't be buying anything for awhile until if/when we can buy it at regular prices.

Actually, the joke is as follows:

The .308 hits a wall at 800 yards, falls to the ground, and has to Walk the other 200 yards to the target. I told that joke to our good buddy GoodDoctor..... We all got a good laugh.

Bearcat, just thought you might like to also look into the .300 WSSM. I don't know the felt recoil (I've never personally fired one) but I know there are several top shooters in the Benchrest (IBS) that shoot this round, with good success at the 1000 yard targets.

Not interested in that caliber. Am currently researching the 280 AI oldman mentioned. Have plenty of time to research since there is no ammo/ reload components for pretty much any caliber at this time.

How much recoil can your shoulder handle, and what are you shooting at past 1000 yards? If your answers are; “not very much” and “targets”, you might want to look at some of the fast 6mm’s. The Berger 109 Hybrid is no slouch in the wind, and will not punish you physically. 1000 yards is no problem with that bullet even from the smallest 6mm cartridges. I’ve shot pretty well at 1000 with a 6mm Grendel variant and 105 hybrids, and .243-sized cartridges are pretty awesome at 1k - good shooters have done some amazing things with them. My 155 grain .308 load is still supersonic at 1200 yards, so you likely already have something perfectly capable of doing what you want to do. If you want to shoot 2,000 yards or something, then that’ll be a different story. I just think that if you are working with a shoulder injury, any fast moving 7mm or .30 is going to not be fun unless it’s a 20# rifle from a rest. And what fun is that, anyways? Next you’ll want to put a scope on it...
