Break-action rifles

Interesting A2A on Quora about break-action rifles. Summary, they're frequently used as gentleman's hunting rifles in Europe, referred to as kipplauf rifles.

Technically, a double barreled rifle is a break action rifle.

Really big, nasty, stuff is often hunted with them.

They also usually cost more than 2 whole rifles.

Yes, I was surprised to learn that "express" refers to the rifle being double-barreled. Very handy when an enraged elephant, rhino or hippo is charging you and the first round either missed or wasn't enough.

At that point, I would be pinning all my hopes that the charging animal would be repulsed by the smell of copious quantities of human excrement and urine.......

Actually express in the British sense means a light for caliber bullet at a higher velocity.

The various nitro express rounds were lighter than the classic black powder rounds, and substantially faster.

An express rifle was one chambered for a smaller bullet going faster...

A .577 NE was smaller and faster than a bore rifle.... like an 8 bore elephant gun.

It is not synonymous with a double rifle. They did make single shot express rounds, and magazine express rifles (the classic being the .404 rimless nitro express- aka .404 Jeffery.)
