Almost traded..

Postby Rogelk on Sat Aug 22, 2009 1:53 pm

my SIG this morning at the Forest Lake Gun Show. I went there looking for another SIG, a 220. Didn't see much and then spotted a Colt Mk IV Series 80 Gold Cup Nat'l Match. I've always had an itch for a 1911 from my service days and earned an expert medal with one ( I've heard the military just gives them away, but I was the only one that received one in my company 8-) ) Anyway, the dealer wanted $850.00 and was willing to give me $500.00 for the P239. My SIG is probably worth $600.00 if sold outright, it's a safe queen with 100 rds thru it. When you factor in shipping and FFL somewhere else the trade he offered was acceptable. The reason I didn't do it was my lack of familiarity with 1911's and what to look for with a used one. I like that version and everything seemed tight. The bore looked clean and rifling looked good. Still wasn't sure and backed out. What's your opinions of this Model Colt? I am aware of the 80's firing pin block. Thanks.

Go for it.

Colts are wonderful guns. If you're really looking for a very nice Colt, drop by Boone's Fine Guns in Isle, on the south east shore of Mille Lacs. They specialize in collectible Colts and Hi Powers.

I don't know what the fair price would be for the 1911 you're looking at, but even if he's high, what he's giving you for your trade is making up for it. Prices have gone up because of all the fear mongering, but I can't imagine you'd get $500 cash for a used P239 these days, no matter how good a shape it's in.

Well that's discouraging. The booths at the gun show were selling them for $600. + with obvious signs of wear. I believe the basic model like mine NIB at Cabelas is near $700....I'll have to look closer next time I'm there.

I screwed up badly in that prior post. Sorry, Rogelk. I went through the records and see that I bought and sold my P239 with two mags, box, etc., for $565 in July 2007. Memory is getting bad in my old age. Again, my apologies for the mistake. I do remember though that it was hard to resell even though they have such good reputations. I had started it at $700 but didn't get even one bite until I got down to the $565.

Well thanks for the correction onebohemian...sounds about right for '07. I think SIG adds $10.00 a month, every month as a company policy. Thanks again.

Cabelas in Owatonna had a few of these when I was there last, not too long ago. Along with some other nice looking 1911s in Super .38..

Unfortunately, I don't remember the price.

Kimbers have huge fans and also many that dislike them. The switching from int./ext /int. extractors and the series II firing pin blocks seem to contribute to the opinions.

This model has a naked front strap. Anyone know who does serrations or checkering locally? And what mags are recommeded, Kimber or some other brand? Kimber only gives you one with no base plate...you would think they could do better than that.

How about the plastic mainspring housing? Did most of you replace them with metal? I think I'll eventually do it...it kind of bugs me a litt...ALOT!

I was bothered with the plastic mainspring housing at first, but after putting thousands and thousands of rounds through it with no problem, I no longer find it to be an issue. I also think it's easier to replace the main spring in the the plastic housing than it is in the metal........ YMMV.

BTW, how do those rubber grips feel..... The ones I have had the "pleasure" of testing felt pretty greasy. I can help fix that if you're interested..... :)

The Wilson mags are better than the Kimber mags in my experience.
