Postby bighole on Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:10 pm

New to this forum and to the world of semi auto pistols ( have always shot large bore revolver )..I just purchased a new EAA and have replaced the recoil spring with a 20# for warm but not real hot loads.I also have a 20# hammer spring but i have no idea how to do the replacement.I am not great mechanically, but more than capable of following instructions. Can anyone help?? Also, I plan to handload ( which I have never done ), with 180 Hornady..Any suggestions for warm but not sizzling loads??

The EAA takes the short (1.25" hammer spring. I replaced mine with a 22# spring, but can't quite remember the details. What you should do is download the exploded parts diagram from the EAA website and it will show you which roll pin you have to push out. You may have to grind 10 or 20 mils of the spring off to get it to fit, as it is 100% compressed when the hammer is cocked. Punching out the roll pin is not to bad, but putting it back in can be a bitch. You should have a nail or drill rod of slightly smaller diameter to get the hammer in the proper position, and then drive the secondary pin out of the way with the roll pin.

As far as loads, with 180 grain bullets , 10.5 grains of Blue Dot does well, and 11.0 is ABSOLUTE MAX for 180 grain bullets. COL is 1.250".

Get some loading manuals and start at the bottom load and work your way up.

Thank you, Rem700, I had missed the part about him being a newb because I was trying to visualize the hammer spring pin location in my head.

Yes, go out and buy a copy of Speer #14, and read the whole EFFEN thing cover-to-cover. That means every bit of the reloading advice, PLUS you will learn a lot reading about each caliber. I have a tendency to get completely unhinged and flame newbs for trying to run before they can walk, so read the WHOLE manual FIRST, and then you can pester us with all the questions you want.

The good news for you is that the EAA 10mm Witness is an ungodly strong gun, and can run on a steady diet of the origibnal Norma factory spec ammo (200 grain bullet @ 1200 FPS) with no problems. I have a 10mm Witness, a 45 Witness that I have worked up to 45 Super, a 10mm Stock, and a 38 Super Match that can put a 125 grain Gold Dot out the front at 1450 FPS. Some Witnesses run great out of the box, some require some polishing of the breech face and the inside of the mag bodies to run smoothly.

I have a eaa witness in 10mm, When I bought it it would jam hollow points on the top of the chamber, not every time but enough that it was a pain. I found a thread years ago to file the sharp edge off and that took care of the constant jamming but still happens once in a while but semi flat nose bullets feed great. the other problem I had with it was it would throw the casings 30 feet away I reload so I want them I installed a stronger spring and now the casings fall about 5 feet away. I also have the 9mm conversion for it and perfer to shoot with 9mm extremely accurate and shoots flawless.
Took a deer with 10mm a couple of years ago was a rush first deer with a pistol.
