There is a "correct" way to shoot a 1911? Do tell, please.

And note that S&W and NOT Kimber or Springfield has been winning the 1911 competitions for the last few years (which, I am not sure, I saw it on some show I was watching on the Sportsman's Channel). I chose my S&W 1911 without that knowledge, but I shoot so well with it, it was kind of vindicating to know that little tidbit of information. I carry the Government Model SW1911PD and it has turned out to conceal great even as a summer carry (then again, I am a pretty tall guy with a solid frame). My Wife is still astonished that she can't see it until I point it out to her under a simple tee shirt.

I like Kimber, but the price is just a little pricier (IMHO because of the name) than the equivalent S&W models and I haven't been able to find anything on them that I like better (they are both GREAT guns!). In fact, S&W has a patent (supposedly) on the Aluminum Scandium alloy that they use for their frames. My 1911 weighs 32 ounces unloaded. My Glock 21SF (anybody want to buy it from me?) weighs in at 28 ounces if I remember correctly, but it holds five more rounds of ammunition at the expensive of making it harder to conceal.

Personally, any polymer pistol that I buy will probably be a Springfield XD or XDm or possibly the S&W M&P models. I have fired the SubCompcact XD in 9mm and it was an easy transfer from my 45ACP 1911 and accuracy was about the same. Not bad for a polymer pistol and firing it for the first time ... so you won't see me knocking them. I haven't shot the M&P yet (I am considering a compact M&P 40 cal).

OK, so I effectively sidetracked the subject. I guess my point is why buy a minimalist 1911 if you can get a better gun for the same price with a polymer frame. Since you have it, my advice doesn't really apply to you anymore, but maybe for other potential buyers. Glocks were my hasty buy when I started shooting and after awhile, my accuracy improves, but out of the box, they don't come close to some other pistols that I have fired in the same caliber including polymer frame pistols and I have never matched the accuracy of shooting my 1911 when using a Glock 21SF; maybe putting in a match grade barrel and modifying the trigger so that it is a little lighter might make a difference, but then I should just sell it off and get the XD.
You could get a new lease on life -- if only you didn't need the first and last month in advance.

I paid $300 for my Armscor Rock Island Armory GI, slightly used two days ago.

I have three other plastic 45's. The point of my original post was to inquire about some different sights. I'm not looking to make this a race gun. It certainly doesn't need curb feelers. It was cheap and I'd like to keep it that way. It is my feeling that $300 for this was a bargain.

Do you mind sharing where you got it if you got it at a shop? I'd be interested & I'm guessing others might too.

Thanks,

Yes, thank you. Now, how does one go about shooting it correctly?

I think thats kinda on the rich side for a paperweight/hammer myself but i guess with all that money you saved on the car-let by only buying the front end, it would make it seem a bargain also

O.K. I'm done poking, nice purchase Bruce

Not sure who said S&W is winning any 1911 competitions, they are kicking but in the production class with the M&P however.

The S&W 1911 is a nice gun but.....it has an external extractor. Something that is not very attractive and certainly not needed. Somefolks consider that a major issue and claim they are not 'real' 1911's. Not sure I would go that far but I do think it makes for one ugly side of a slide and a exposed moving part that does not serve a valid purpose.

In term of price I'd rank the Kimber the most overpriced followed closely by S&W. S&W makes darn nice guns but I'd not give them credit for being modestly priced when they are new.

Springfield is the frame most of the 1911 guys are competing with, followed by STI and then a slew of other brands. I can't recall seeing anyone ever with a S&W in the single stack division.

And no I'm not anti S&W, I own two; a Model 41, and a K38. Neither were cheap, both are classics ,scary accurate, worth every penny. I just not sure I would put S&W on the list for making 'great' 1911's.

I own three Kimbers -- Ultra CDP II, SIS Pro, Custom CDP II -- with some tweaking, they are fantastic firearms. Pricey though.

My minimalist gun is my Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 -- the only change I've made is narrower grips from vzgrips (I have small hands) - otherwise no changes. It's a great pistol -- it would also make a good frame for mods, etc.. but that's not really my thing ;)

I know people get wound up over this, and the money you spent on the RIA is a deal, really it is, as they went out and got two good guys who went thru the whole program in the Philippines and set down what was the right way and what was the wrong way to build 1911. The last couple of years, they have been shipping well built, well fitted GI guns. Are they a Brown or Baer at basement prices? no. but they are well made basic guns, they have an upgraded gun for a steal as well.

The only changes I would do to that gun to make if fit me would be upgrade the sights and add a beaver tail. If I don't have a beaver tail, I get cut, just the way my hands fit the gun. I would probably toss the grips, as I hate finger groove grips, just me, not saying for someone else they very well might be the cat's meow.

I would skip the Wilson mags and buy metalforms or Chip McCormick mags for my spares. Both companies make good mags, at a price where you can afford to have enough....about half of what wilson charges.
