Got a new Dan Wesson RZ 10

Postby sigsteve on Wed Nov 25, 2009 9:51 am

This is my first 1911 and I think I did pretty good. I'm usually pretty particular about my gun purchases and I decided whatever 1911 I got would be a 10mm. I've been hearing a lot about this round and it has lived up to it's reputation! I love this round! It may be the best auto round ever made!

Lost me.

10mm is extremely cool, but I can't get over the original and say something else is better. I'm not saying I'd kick this pistol out of bed though... Congratulations.

You are going to find out real fast that shooting a 10mm while cool, is a bit of a punishing deal. You will like your pistol a lot more than you are going to like the caliber.

Beautiful pistol! If you are only shooting factory loads you are far under velocity of what a 10mm can/should be.

Beautiful pistol!

I'd stick to the .45 instead of the 10mm, but great choice anyways ;)

What??? Do we have some FBI agents with weak wrists on this board?? The recoil from a 10mm isn't bad at all. You want nasty, try my EAA 45 Super putting a 185 gr bullet out the pipe at 1260. THAT's nasty!! I've offered some OGC members a chance to shoot this, and they have all backed away.

Oh, and be aware that a lot of 10mm factory ammo is watered down crap, and may only push the bullet 50 - 100 FPS faster than stock 40 S&W loads. The "real stuff" is sold by Corbon and Doubletap. Original factory spec is a 200 grain bullet at 1200 FPS. If you're not handloading yet, this is the best reason you will probably have to start. 10mm ammo is pricey, and not easy to find.

What do you think Sam: if you load 10mm up to spec in that gun, would you need one of those recoil dampening thingamabobs in that 1911 to keep from battering it to pieces?

The good… Second gun I ever got was a glock 29. 10mm is really not that bad. Much much easier to shoot then say a 38+p from a j frame.

The bad…. You could have gotn two guns for the cost of ammo… $$$$$$

I always get so jealous when other people get new guns…
I love it when a plan comes together!

You should really have at least one real 1911 in .45 ACfrickinP before venturing out into the other calibers. Nice gun, though! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.

Wow! Thanks for the opinions, but I'm a bit shocked at all the anti-10mm comments! I like the 10 for the fact that you can shoot a lite load at the range and it's like a bit stronger than a .40 S%W, but when you want to have some real power it's just another box away! Id any of you have ever shot like a Double Tap or Buffalo Bore you know what I'm talking about. That thing is massively powerful for a semi-auto! You'd have to get like a Desert Eagle .44mag or .50AE to top that!

I'm going to get another DW in a CBOB and it will be a 10mm too if I can find one. They're very scarce right now. I'll go for a .45 if I can't find one though.

I think if most guys around here were handed a pistol like yours, and 5,000 rounds of ammo. You'd hear zero complaints. In reality, all of our comments on whether your pistol is our idea of a perfect pistol or not... means precisely zero in how much you will enjoy it. Have fun with it.

Cool gun, cool caliber, and like you and SS said its versatile if you reload (or, if you win the lottery, can afford to buy factory 10mm ammo in any significant quantity. Not to mention the ability to just find 10mm ammo.) 10mm on the strong side, and I'd feel comfortable taking deer with it.

That's a sweet gun! Now you need some exotic leather, like shark skin or osteridge so you can do it up Miami Vice style. 8-)

If you are serious about shooting start reloading. You can reload 10mm for around the same price as 45ACP, maybe less. You probably can even just use 40 brass and load long.

I'm a big 45ACP fan, but I wouldn't try and claim that it's cheap to shoot.

I would love to hear a veteran reloader's take on this. I would assume that the two cases are designed for entirely different pressure spectrums, not to mention other physical differences between chambers and could present some interesting dangers if experimented with.

Then again I don't know, not having reloaded for either of them, so I will wait patiently for SS and a few others to chime in. :geek:

I've always wanted a 10mm (miami vice probably had something to do with it), but since growing up and learning how much punch they deliver - that's one heck of a nice round.

The gun looks great. Enjoy her.
