Magnum Research 1911?

Postby mrokern on Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:57 am

I did a search, didn't see this. If a thread is out there, please direct me.

Does anyone have further info on the Magnum Research 1911 beyond the little that has been leaked? Features? Pricing?

If you scroll down the referenced page and listen to the "almighty rage" of the crowd that are so offended by MR's marketing campaign its kind of funny, my favorite being " die in a fire please". Its a marketing guys!!!, settle down a little, sheesh makes the 1911/Glock thing seem irrelevant

Yep, with Monsch on this one. Liking a particular platform is great. But working up to the level of outrage for something like this is borderline silly. (I know I'll probably be forced to walk the plank tomorrow morning for saying that, but come on, really?)

Still, I'd say that is a ballsy statement to say they are a 1911 now. If they work right, then cool. 'til then, they haven't proven anything. If I were to buy one, it would be after a handful of years so they get all the kinks out. Plenty of other proven brands for me to drop $800 on in the meantime.

Sincerely,

That is pretty boneheaded marketing scheme: the product you love was total crap until we decided to make one.

everyone else continually claims to have "finally" brought out the best gun ever, in tone saying that everything else was crap till theirs came out

But it's the sacred 1911, given by God directly to the hands of John Moses Browning. It demands reverence.

And us 1911 cult members are actually can be pretty open hearted about a new convert/manufacturer. No arrogance is necessary. It's sort of like Luke 15:7: "I tell you that in the same way there will be rejoicing in Heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."

Hmm let me see if I follow this.

A company known for making the Hollywood gun decided to do the same thing as everybody else and make a 1911. Then said company decided to ridicule every other 1911 by saying it wasn't until now that the platform "earned" the name Desert Eagle. And now fans of the 1911 are screaming garbled angry non-sense instead of just ignoring said company.

Yup sounds like nobody is free of stupidity here. In my book a gun hasn't "earned" the title Desert Eagle until it comes in a caliber starting with a 5.

So does anybody know who will be manufacturing this model? MRI outsources all their manufacturing. They are basically a marketing company.

I haven't seen the 1911 blurb, but I can tell you that there is a definite preceived quality difference between Israel made DE 50's, which are the ones you want to own, and American at least assembled ones, which are regarded as pretty much crap. In addition, a press release came out sometime back that MR was opening a gun factory in Brainerd to completely manufacture the DE, and I'm not sure where that is now with the recession on.

I certainly wouldn't want to own a MR 1911 until I had seen somebody else spend their money and report good results based on the spotty quality of the American DE 50's.

And please don't Guncrafter Industries mixed up in this. Their quality and engineering are impeccable beyond reproach, and between them Victor Tibbets and Alex Zimmerman had 40 years of experience at Wilson Combat before they went out on their own. And in addition, it was no mean feat to design a cartridge THAT big that would operate in the same space as a 45 ACP cartridge. The only downside to the 50 GI besides its cost is that is kind of ruins you for anything less, either in quality or caliber.

I only mentioned GI because of the "Starts with a 5" comment.

I've heard good things about Bul, though, so if that is who's making them, I'd expect them to be fine.

My wife's grandmother retired from MR this past year, and I remember her commenting that their was a factory up and running in Brainerd... Don't know what they are producing at that location though.
