You're probably in the Twin Cities, but knowing where you are helps(update that part of your profile!). I've got a Kel-tec p3at I could sell for $225, but I'm in Bemidji, so likely no help to you.

So if it was YOUR neighborhood you would be more trusting? Hmmmm...

I haven't seen anything to suggest it is anything but steel. 1911 pistols made by Armscor certainly are.

My first centerfire handgun was a Hi-Point. Still carry it when I know I'm gonna get wet or muddy (I canoe and shoot carp in the spring, often getting both). Great gun for a beater.
I got nothin'

From personal experience... I bought a Hi-Point (9mm) a couple of years ago to see if they were as good/bad as some claimed. Actually, I know the dealer from Polar Bear Ordnance and he swears by them... After long discussions and me not believing him I decided to buy one to more or less prove him wrong.

I put approximately 1,200 - 1,300 rounds through it over the course of a three month period or so, and had zero failures or malfunctions. It ran 100% all the time.

I was extremely surprised. I ended up selling it because even though it worked fine, I had no use for it and didn't enjoy shooting it all that much. I will completely go with White Horseradish that the majority of of Hi-Point "horror stories" that you hear are third hand accounts and not from personal experience.

I'm not saying it's an ideal carry weapon, nor would I probably ever recommend it over anything else, but from my experience at least, I think they may have gotten somewhat of a bad reputation without good cause.

Speaking of cheap handguns, J&G Sales has Polish P64s for $160+shipping+transfer.

They are supposed to be a little unpleasant to shoot, but Wolff makes a spring kit to fix the trigger and reduce the recoil, and in the mean time, it'll still go bang.

9x18 is pretty cheap to shoot for a centerfire handgun round that isn't 7.62x25 too, I've seen 50 round boxes of Silver Bear brand hollow points for $12 online. FMJs are $10.

They look real nice with wood grips and a reblue job...

Only real downside is that the caliber is not sold at Walmart.

I agree with a previous poster who mentioned the CZ 82. IMO, they are the best deal out there for a semi-auto. They are reliable, accurate and 9x18 ammo is cheap and abundant. When not carrying my .45, I'll slip on the CZ 82. Btw, they hold 13 rounds and if you possess a C&R license you can have one shipped directly to your doorstep. As for carrying, just about any holster made for a Walther PP will work for the CZ 82.

Here is just one place to buy one for about $225 total cost.

I tried to shoot a hi-point 9mm... once. The recoil was insane, the gun is uncomfortably top-heavy, and it jammed 3 times in 2 mags on me. I was done after that.

Your money would be much better spent on a used revolver, or a small 380.

Go to bills, and try shooting a few different things, come up with a shortlist of what you like, and then post up here what you're looking for.

J&G has 38 special K frames for cheap:

Smith & Wesson Model 15
Smith & Wesson Model 67

Probably no more bulky than a Hi-Point.

I don't own one, but I would use that one if I had to. The carbine we shot that day also worked 100% with everything but the aluminum cased Blazer.

I have heard nothing but positive things about the Hi Point 9mm carbine. But the handguns are a whole different story, big, heavy and all but impossible to get a few magazines of ammo through them without it jamming. The Hi Point handgun would not be a choice for me to depend my life on. Find a used Rossi, Taurus or S&W revolver. If you can come up with a little more change, keep your eyes open for an older P series Ruger semi auto, they can be found in the mid $200 range. Maybe the Rugar is a bit big for carry, but a very reliable handgun.
