Guns make loud noises too don't they? Screw pots and pans.

Yeah, but I don't know of any pots and pans that when clanged together will wound a bear to the point of being pissed off enough to tear your face off rather than just walking away.

Most hand guns will do that pretty quickly and efficiently. ;)

(ETA, this is some of the finest, and well masked thread drift I have seen in recent history. Keep it up! :D )

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. A gun does what pots and pans do (who says you have to shoot it if you just want to scare it away?) and guns do what pots and pans can't do. So why mess with the pots and pans? Is it tactically sound to try the pots first, then fumble and throw them at the bear when you figure out the pots and pans didn't cut the mustard and now you wish you had a gun in your hands?

This logic is inconceivable.

Which is why I posted about wearing a helmet in your car when you drive every day: because it is more likely to save your life than any gun in "bear country" is, x1,000,000,000 if you actually know what you are doing in the wilderness.

People crack me up when they talk about all of these ridiculously contrived scenarios and how this, that, or the other thing might give them a slightly larger chance of survival in a situation that will likely never occur......all while living their life without exercise, drinking a lot of alcohol, and frequently eating fast food.

(I am not saying you fall into that group, just pointing out a trend I have noticed)

I would venture to guess that if everyone on this BB was instantly teleported to someplace remote in Alaska, alone, with nothing but some cloths and a good knife, that the vast majority of deaths that ensued would have absolutely nothing to do with being eaten, mauled, or raped by bears....brown, black, kodiak or other.

I know, in all seriousness you are talking some very sound logic. I just enjoy the speculation part and getting a laugh out of it. Some people get awful serious about what will save them in that event when its a 0.00007% chance it will happen to them. Meanwhile, let the bacon roll. running? whats that? hey lets jump in the car after 6-15 beers, it'll be fine. etc, etc.

Not really trying to have a serious argument with you Goalie. As I see nothing that you have said that I don't agree with. But, I'd still be likely to take a gun with me into the Alaskan wilderness. Meanwhile it'd be bright to study up on some more applicable survival methods. Food/clothing/shelter/water/ etc.

Ok its saturday, enough VoR for one day.

That's why I made sure to include the

;)

And, FWIW, I didn't say that I wouldn't carry my .44mag in Alaska, I would. I just wouldn't lose sleep if I didn't have it. (I would also refrain from some activities if I was unarmed. Fishing in direct proximity to large, furry animals that enjoy eating fish while unarmed comes to mind.)

Anyone with any wilderness experience knows that when a big bear charges you, you then charge the bear and as you are meeting you jump aside because the bear can not react that fast because of it's size and momentum will carry it past you. Then you have time to climb tree.

For being the VoR I would have thought you would have realized it's a little safer to be behind hammAR talking about him then being in front of him. ;)

I don't know, hammAR is the kind of guy who you'd almost feel safer if you could see him than if you couldn't.

Otherwise I'd like to be no less than 3000 yards out of range.

Meanwhile, back to watching Peyton Manning do what he does. Strad and his SO are on the couch, and I gotta say, there is a certain amount of apprehension that the Vikes are going to win tonight...

Hilarious.

I would but he's on the front steps trying to chain smoke his violent feelings toward Brent Farva away.

Well, I went a week ago and rented/shot the XD45, M&P .45 and the Glock G21. I just didn't care for the Glock at all, I wanted to like it, but it felt really awkward (boxy, clunky) in my hands and I was all over the paper with it. I did like the M&P and shot decent with it but something about it just wasn't right, in the end the XD45 just fit perfect in my hands and I shot *extremely* well with it, far better than with the other two pistols. So, I picked up my Springfield XD .45 compact yesterday, courtesy of forum member Thunderjohn; urban arms dealer ;)

And now, I am taking my carry permit class tomorrow with Metro Defense Training, LLC

Thank you MNGunTalk! You gave me some quality advice, a line on a deal for my new handgun and also an unbeatable price on a carry permit class. :)
