First 1911?

Hey all, I'm looking for some input on getting in to the 1911 market. I'm married, so I can't go nuts on the piece, but looking for a reasonable entry point and a decent place to purchase one. Seems like lots of places online are out of stock, and I don't like getting worked over on pricing...

I saw several (colts / S&Ws) at Bullseye Shooter's Supply in Lake Elmo, MN earlier today -- nice selection, particularly if you're after colts.

Beyond that, my first 1911 was a Kimber Classic CDP - still a great pistol. I like my Springfield Mil-Spec as well, which will run you $700 or so last time I looked - they may have come down since then. Both Bill's stores had several in-stock last time I was there (Circle Pines, few weeks ago - Robbinsdale, earlier this week)

For a first I would go with a Springfield. You could do a Mil or go full boat to a TRP. A Loaded is a very nice mid point.

Maybe Pete will chime in here and correct me, but I seem to remember the stainless springfield govt model was around $600ish (used in excellent condition from what I saw of it).

I was on a wheel gun mission so I didn't pay that much attention. Really nice looking gun though.

Check Frontiersman. There's always a large selection on the wall, and there are some nice used ones there as well.

What's your intended use? Carry gun? Range gun? Gun games? Perhaps this gun needs to play multiple roles for you. It makes a difference.

In general, a Springfield Loaded or a Kimber Custom II are nice 1911s that will serve you well.

Good questions Joe, basically a range gun for now. $700 or so is what I'm ready to shell out, ideally for a good condition used gun or a very well priced NIB. In theory, for a range gun, I could go with the Kimber 22 rimfire and shoot all day long...

A Springer Loaded in great shape will fall nicely in that price range.

Better, I think, to get the "real" Kimber first, and the .22 slide assembly second. While the slide assembly will work with basically any standard .45 1911, I am not sure that you can put a .45 slide on the .22 LR 1911.

Gunstop had several, as did Al in white bear lake, Al had a few Colt's that would be $700 to 900, for good solid used guns, as well as few new ones for around the same, (series 70's do bring a slight premium over new production)

I was at Frontiersman and there was a new Springfield GI going for $580. Talked to Marv about getting a Springfield Loaded on order soon. They also had a used Springfield Mil Spec that had been played with a little bit. Laser grips and a little trigger work that I believe was going right around $750.
