My dad is getting interested

My dad has been making mumblings about wanting a pistol for target practice. We've gone out shooting .22 and .45 a couple times.

My mom and I are going to go in on it together, and maybe some other family members also, I'm not sure about that yet though, and I'd like to stay under $300. New or used is okay, but if used I want it to be in excellent condition. It's a .22, not a Garand.

Recommendations? Tips on how to look for a used pistol? Have one you are wanting to get rid of?

Do you think he'd prefer an auto, or a revolver ??? I've been looking at the new stainless Ruger 22 revolvers Bear Cat ( maybe ), some of them are available with both LR & Magnum switchable cylinders...

otherwise you are pretty much talking Ruger or Browning Buck Mark, or the newer Berreta or S&W auto offerings, both the Rugers & Browning will have their followers, that insist each is better, but IMO, all the new offerings of the models I listed are very good...

thisis my old ( pre slab side ) Ruger Gov. Target Model... it's way more accurate than I'll ever be...

I have a Beretta U22 NEOS. It's okay, nothing special but the fact it comes with a rail is neat. Plus it is cheap, I got the blued version for $209.

I have a Taurus Tracker .22 in stainless. It's a fun gun to shoot and very affordable.

Saw that over there. You've been around enough to have thick skin, so it probably doesn't matter to you what I think, but regardless, it really irks me when a guy gets his hands publicly slapped for posting such an obviously innocent question.

As for your post, I really like my Taurus M94 4" .22 revolver. It's not the Tracker model; just a more weakly built version. Other than having to blue loctite on the rear sight, this thing has been a dream to shoot. Fairly accurate as well. Was used and cost me $200 from Hart Brothers out of Albert Lea. They got it from some estate sale. Needed a cleaning but was spotless otherwise. Hart Brothers has their entire inventory online, and I'm sure they will be at the December gun show/sale that's coming up in Mpls (?, might be St. Paul). If you see something you like on their site, you can call or email them to make sure they bring it with them to the show so you don't have to drive to Albert Lea.

Still available, yep. It's rather slow to load, being a single action revolver, but it's fun to shoot.

Yeah, that response irked me too. I thought about apologizing, but the way he went about it with the big red letters rather than a gentle reminder in the standard font size changed my mind.

Bah, oh well. I tend to stay out of arguments on message boards and so I'm going to drop it here, and I have more important things to worry about right now anyway. Like finding a good pistol for my dad

I think, speaking as just me, that it was the close proximity of a solicitation for a sale by someone else and your offer to buy coming so close together, both with cross post links to this board. I read it, and can see where you might be irked but think it was just a reminder and nothing sinister. With the no sales prohibition at TCC, it's a fine line to walk.

Which is why I dropped it. I didn't know about the other event, I didn't care for the way he framed his response, but I didn't take enough issue to get pissed about it because it was still a valid point that I had forgotten in my copy/pasting.

I have no idea of the specifics regarding your post "over there," but consider yourself in good company.

I would look at the Buck mark, the S&W .22, and the Ruger,

I like all three, All three are as accurate as you can be, I also like the Sig trailside as that is actually a Hammerli pistol, which is very top end, The Beretta 87, if you can find one, is a wonderful pistol as well,

I would stay away from the sig Mosquito, as despite it feeling terrific, they seem to still have function bugs.

Another option, which exceeds your price limit, is to try a .45 with a .22 top end. The Kimber and the Marvel top ends are very accurate, reliable, and really fun to shoot, and you have the .45 to go back to.

in that lower price range, the S&W 22A, Ruger MK II/III, Browning Buckmark all are great choices. The 22A would be a lot easier to maintain, and has an accessory rail for cheap red dot to make him a range God

I've always wondered about those 1911 conversions. I don't own a Kimber at the moment. Will they work with all 5" 1911's? How about slide to frame fit?

I Have a marvel, and it fits fine on both my stainless SA and my older essex frame, which is the only two I have put it on. It may be as accurate as any .22 I have shot, but it's main use is just keeping the gun hand when i can not go to the range.

I have shot two Kimber's one was bought as the .22 unit, the other was put on a S&W bottom and shot wonderfully, the Kimber shot just fine too.

I also have an original ACE, but that hardly gets shot anymore, as the value has gone to the point where its more reasonable to let it reside safely in the box.

Kimber says ( I just called them,) that it will work on any single stack, single action, (no LDA para) either series 80 or 70, and it should work on commanders too, but there will the gap at the dust cover.

The kimbers are a few dollars less money, I think they street price at right around $275. with good sights and a mag.
