Are you trying to be .45GAP's protective dad who needs to defend it on the Internet? I'm stating an opinion, if you have a .45GAP and love it more power to you...or less as the case may be. I suppose you think other pointless calibers like 9x21mm IMI are cool too?

No, I'm really not. As I stated earlier, if you're going to disparage the product, at least be factual and maybe even have some kind of experience with the product.

You raise perhaps the most important point of all: what's a "pointless caliber?" Why does there need to be a point? Why are folks so threatened by this? Why all the hostility (besides being a MNGT hallmark, that is)?

One of the main reasons given for .45GAP being created was a shorter length was supposedly needed to fit in a smaller frame Glocks pistol. But if you compare the Glock pistol offerings in .45GAP to other compact .45ACP's that logic doesn't seem to be holding true.

Huh? Glock's exact reasoning for creating the GAP cartridge was to fit .45 into their current iteration small frame. This is a fact. There is no "supposedly".

GAP slide dimensions are very similar (see large) to their .45acp/10mm slides. The frames of their GAP pistols are identical to and interchangeable with their small frame 9, 40, 357's. Obviously, the easily swappable ejectors are different. As well the GAP's get an extended slide stop lever due to the increased slide width.

Currently there are no other manufacturers of GAP chambered pistols. Glock has already manufactured and delivered 3000+ Gen4 37's for the Florida Highway Patrol. I would believe this does not bother Gaston, nor his ego one bit.

This board is not hostile in the least compared to the majority of the internet. It's silly to call hostility a hallmark of this very white bread and polite website.

Just because you wouldn't write a letter to your mother using the tone you see here, doesn't mean that the discourse is any more hostile than any particular gathering of a hundred or so people in real life or on the internet. Rather this is a much less hostile place than most such gatherings.

Norsesmithy, perhaps you're right. I've been lurking here for quite some time and I have seen my share of vitriol. It's probably not fair for me to paint with such a wide brush, however.

Back to the topic:

I don't think the G37/38/39's were intended to compete with other manufacturers offerings, indeed they were the first pistols developed for this caliber.

I must admit, I don't know what the exact reasoning was behind it's development other than a smaller alternative to their .45 ACP pistols, which it is. I seriously doubt it was intended to kill the ACP (which is what people act like it is). I don't think they (GLOCK) would be that unrealistic.

I'm sure it has more to do with capitalism then anything else. Designer designs a gun and caliber offering, management team does some focus groups makes decision, give to marketing to sell to Military and Law Enforcement agencies, then the general public buys what the Military and LEO's are buying and continue to evaluate sales to make adjustments to product line.

Alright I'll withdraw my "supposedly" statement. In some regards that makes twisted sense since German/Austrian designers wouldn't dare think of just making a new series small frame iteration that could handle the .45ACP like other manufactures have apparently done. Instead they had to come up with a new round to fit into the old frame design.

And even if you disagree with me, that's fine... but you're wrong about .45GAP not being offered by other manufactures though:

Back to the original question JeffD asked and if it hasn't been said yet, you may want to see if you can get your dad to try a couple of different calibers to see which one he likes. You may be able to talk one of the guy's here on forum to meet you or I'm sure Bill's has them for rent.

Umm, the XD-45LE was announced in 2004 and they've been/currently are for sale on Gunbroker right now. Nothing current about it. Only reason Springfield probably made it was so departments couldn't rule out the XD in bids because it wasn't available in .45GAP.
