The 642 is a great defensive gun, not so good for just fun target shooting. For reliability reasons I would not touch
it internally. You should function test it with maybe 100 rounds of your carry ammo and you will be fine.

I guess my opinion is irrelevant at this point, but I very briefly owned a 642. It is the only gun I have ever fired that left my hand numb, I would not recommend it to anyone. My wife and I are still trying to get rid of the twitch it induced.
I imagined myself saying to an intruder "Please leave. You have no idea how much I don't want to shoot."

I like my 642. Is it something you want fire a lot of rounds through at one time? No, bu it does have it's place.

Well, I just finished cleaning the 642 after shooting Her today. WOW she packs a punch. 5 +p rounds and 50 Fmj standard pressure rounds. The web between my thumb and index finger split open a little, my thumb is pretty tender and swollen, and I can't wait to shoot it again. Alot of the reviews said it was hard to shoot accurately at first but I didn't have any trouble. At 21 feet my groups were pretty tight and I hit 2 bullseyes.and afterwards my accuracy with my Glock was 168 times better. That 642 makes my G19 fire like a dream. The hks speed loader doesn't really work with this gum well though. Guess ill try a speed strip. All in all, I like the little gun. But I think ill buy new grips before I go shoot it again...

Found your problem......try using the speed loader on your gun instead

I'm a mechanic, so I'm used to them being sore. My hands are fairly large and the webbing on my hands is above the grip on the backstrap, the edge on the backstrap is what ate my skin.

Our own Pat Cannon shooting his Ruger SP101 snubbie, his carry gun. The flash is from a .357 magnum case FULL of Win296, 125gr Hornady XTP/HP. Not even a whimper.

Until he tries to eject the empties.

All that aside. The grips that come on that gun stock are awful. I have some compac Pachmayrs that are much easier to shoot well with on two of my j frames.
