Indoor Ranges

Postby MN JIM on Wed Jan 12, 2011 11:10 am

I am new to the list and live near Winona. I am wondering what the closest indoor range is to Winona? I have done a search and it seems like all are at least 2 hours away. Am I missing something. I shoot all year long but the outdoor range gets a little chilly this time of year.

Jim, you're not missing anything. There are no indoor ranges in SE MN or western WI, not even La Crosse or Rochester. You will have to drive to the Twin Cities. I understand there's an indoor range near Mankato, but the drive is about the same. It's frustrating.

BTW, I belong to the Winona Sportsman's Club. I'm looking forward to the thaw so I can get back out there again and practice.

That's good to know. Maybe I'll see you out there if we get a little break in the weather.

I was told that someone in Rochester was considering building an indoor range, and it was being considered back in the fall. I don't know what the status of that is, but it sounded like it was a real possibility. I thought that it was Coyote Creek that was going to do it, but I could be mistaken. I suspect that if they did build, it'd likely start this spring or summer. No way to confirm this info without talking to them. My brother was going to check, since he lives down there, but I haven't heard back from him on it.

I'm positive I've been to an indoor range not too far north of Rochester. It's a little west and a little north but closer than coming to the cities. http://www.minutemanrange.com/

That would be VERY cool if the Rochester area could get an indoor range, I'd be there.

I don't think that the Minute Man range is open for normal use anymore, just classes and sales. Back when they were open regularly, they had really poor hours, and it's quite a drive out in the country.

The SMS Club (http://www.smsclub.org) does have an indoor range, but it's only open on Sunday's from 1 to 3pm. The target are at a fixed distance (30 feet I think), and lead-only ammo is required.

I was a member of SMSC for a little while. Not a bad club for what it is, but rather limited. I did a lot of pistol training when nobody was around, which was always nice. It's been at least 7 years since I was member there, so no clue on any changes, though.

Does anyone know how to get info on winona Sportman club as far as practicing ,shooting , who can join. who can use it etc. I know this sound stupid but went to the website and it don't really give the information about any of my questions. Just want to practice with my husband and son and can't find nothing as to anything to do with shoot ranges for pistols kind of hard to practice living in Winona . Any info sure would be REALLY helpful .

My cousin lives down that way. Several years ago, I went with her husband ... he stopped in the clubhouse, joined the club for like $30, and we went down to the pistol range and shot.

No clue if anything's changed, since then.

So is there a good list somewhere of all the indoor and outdoor clubs here in MN.

I have seen a few, but they are outdated as most still list Dakota range that caught of fire and was shut down.

The pistol / rifle range is gerenerally open to members of the Winona Sportsmens Club year round.

The range is closed when they have a scheduled trap shoot that uses the practice trap (closest to the range) which is only like 3 times a year. It is also clsed when the skeet range is in use. They have a leaugue on Thursday night but other than that the skeet range doesn't get much use.

Anyone can join for a yearly fee of $30.

The range is only 100 yds so if you are doing any HP rifle it is not the best.

The pistol range has 8 lanes.

There is a realy informal league for pistols on Tuesday nights starting at 6:00PM. Won't start until about April.

If you need more info let me know.
