Where to carry when riding?

Postby promod1385 on Sun Apr 17, 2011 10:46 am

My father and I had this conversation recently.

Where do yall carry your ccw when riding your motorcycle?

Some say on there person, some say in the tank bag.

On the person is always the best in my opinion. Less chance of separation from the gun, fastest access. Only problem is falling off the bike and landing on the gun!

Tank bag is the most comfortable however you are more likely to be separated from the gun, and you cant leave the tank bag attached to the bike when going in to pay for gas, etc...

Some transition the gun from the bag to there person when they reach there destination.

What is everyone's opinion on this one?

I carry the same place/way as normal. I use a Bianchi Carry lock on my right hip.

My 1911 stays where I always carry it. On my right hip. It's the most comfortable for me driving cars and riding my R6.

IWB as per normal carry. Now when I go into Wisc. that is a whole different animal.

+1
I NEVER worry about losing my sidearm when its in there. It molds nicely to your body so you are less likely to print when riding.

Carry as normal. IWB. Jacket is long enough to cover. If it's really hot out, and I skip the jacket, I'll either pocket carry or tuck in the shirt.

When I got hit by a pickup on my bike I was carrying two pistols neither of which were lost or hurt me, however my wallet was jammed into my hip so hard sideways that all the hard plastic credit cards looked like an accordian. I am sure that is what broke my pelvis, the bumper and grill took care of the femur, tibia and fibula. You do not get to choose when it is you'r time, the chips will fall where they may.ymmv

Yep, I don't change a thing when I hop on the bike. I do take precautions not to flash the thing....

Yikes, I'm glad you managed to get old(er)! And I definitely want to know what holsters you were using.

I was carrying my pt145 Taurus at 4:30 in a Blackhawk cqc leather owb with thumbreak, I think these are the old Askins Avenger, this is my favorite holster I have three of them, my p3at was in my left front pocket in one of Eric's pocket holsters. I was hit from the left.

Same place. I do appendix carry with a leather holster. I noticed that it is too hard for me to use kydex when riding. I also have a tank cover and I see some scratches there from my holster.

Same places, usually a 1911 on the hip, IWB holster, sometimes a compact 9mm in my pocket holster, sometimes front, sometimes rear.

Yeah, I can relate to the bumper and grille taking care of the tibia, fibula, and femur. Exactly like it happened to me. Will be 20 years on 7 June.

I take it most folks who carry on their lower body aren't wearing any sort of leg protection (overpants, or a one-piece like an Aerostich Roadcrafter). My normal spot is my right front pocket, and if I left it there the pants I wear over my work cloths would make it almost impossible to draw the weapon. Instead, I put mine in the pocket of my coat. I also don't have anything in my pants pockets when I'm riding - I don't my wallet/keys/knife/gun driven into my body by the impact of a car or when hitting the ground.
