I'd also consider looking at the new Ruger 1911.

But, I strongly think the best bang for the buck, 1911-wise, is a Rock Island Armory Tactical model.

I bought a used PT1911 when I was feeling the 1911 bug. The Taurus has a lot of nice features for the money. I have had malfunctions due to magazines and ammo QC.

Spend $400-600 on your first 1911. Invest the rest in brass, reloading equipment, and magazines!

See my thread "Bought my first 1911". It's a Springfield Armory Mil Spec M1911-A1. Great gun! $599.99 is what I paid for it. Highly recommended!

Get a Springfield Loaded or RO.

You won't have to jack around with upgrades that are almost manditory for a great range 1911, and you can always put money into particular parts later and construct a shooter that will rival any overblown price whore of a platform.

Love my Para GI Expert. It comes with a throated barrel and with dovetail front and rear sights. Not much more you could ask for for under 600 out the door.

Sig Sauer makes some of the best 1911s for the money in my opinion. S&W also makes a nice gun.
Both have better fit than my last three Colts.

Last time I examined a Sig 1911, it had an infernal lock on the side of the slide ... like kinda behind the extractor ... they give that up?

Smith & Wesson E Series or Springfield Loaded in that price range for a good out-of-the box gun. Springfield GI if you want to build it up. Springfield TRP or Kimber Warrior if you want to spend a little more. Les Baer TRS (or current equivalent) for the most affordable 1911 that you will never grow out of.

Taurus 1911 is also a great choice... and it has a LIFETIME warranty!

Rock Island Armory, just Google it and read the reviews... a 1911 that just works, for ~$400, throw all the same parts at it.

There's a nickel coated version if you want bling, $450.

I agree. The SR1911 seems hard to beat for the $$$!

Any other thoughts on RIA/Armscor firearms? Good value or should I just save up my money for a 'real' 1911? I have funds enough for a RIA now...and I'm impulsive :?

as I said earler--the RIA 1911's are the best bang for the buck, 1911-wise out there. I've had 3 (each one got upgraded to my current, their 2011 tactical with a full length railed dustcover & night sights), and they;ve performed better than former Springfields and Para Ordinances that cost 150% or more than I paid for the RIA's. And if you should have a problem their customer service will make it right.

I'd recommend getting their Tactical model with improved sights and a few other goodies (beavertail, ambi safety)...for the $75 or so you pay extra, it's worth it.

Ok, I did it. I bought my first 1911. I came to the forum looking for advice, which of course I promptly ignored (did I mention I am impulsive?). I picked up an 'American Classic' Government Model 1911 at Bill's the other day. It's one of those 'made in the Philippines' guns, but not Armscor/RIA. Please don't flame me for not getting a Springfield :) . I feel pretty good about my pruchase. It's gonna be a range toy, not a carry piece (got my Ruger revolver or Sig P238 for that). Research I've done seems to be positive about this firearm.

Took it home, and cleaned it up. Fit and finish seem very solid. A matte finish stainless with wood checkered grips. Put 50 rounds of ball ammo through it yesterday, and no issues at all. Not too excited about the giant 'American Classic' rollmark on the slide, but thats ok.

I like it so far.

Do I count as a 'real' 1911 owner?

Here are a couple of pics....
