CZ 75 P-01 - Multiple Failures to Feed

Postby Thunder71 on Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:22 pm

Took my new to me CZ out to the range today and put 53 rounds on target, but must have had at least 10 failures to feed. It got really annoying and I think it must be the magazine. Going to try and get to the range again tomorrow with a different magazine to see what happens, it was just bulk target ammo.

Question is, what can I do with the magazine to try and get it working properly, if anything - and are some magazines just problem childs?

Gun is an absolute joy to shoot otherwise, and by far the most accurate gun I have (in my hands anyway).

Actually I have seen it where Winchester white box would not feed reliably and changing the ammunition to a different brand made the problem go away.

I could try that... this was Remington UMC 250 pack, never had issues with it in anything else but I guess each gun has it's own attitude.

DUDE, it's called 9mm NATO, break your NATO SPEC czech gun in with it.

Seriously though, I've found that you need to either shoot about 200 rounds of NATO through these european guns, or else take them apart, Clean and oil them real well, and then cycle the slide back and forth HARD like 200 times to break in the recoil spring. They come out the box real stiff, and along with the cosmoline or whatever they are packed in, they need some hard lovin and good cleaning/oiling to get them to eat that weak sauce Remington.

White box is a little more spicy so it might work better, however let the gun stretch it's legs (aka break in the recoil spring) and you wont' have any more problems. :D

Oh, and quit limp wristing it. :o :P

Definitely try another mag. I've got one with my FN that causes no end of FTFs and won't lock the slide back. The other two function 100%. Likely the mag spring, in my case.

No, not that guy. Or that other one either.

#1 Make sure your gun and mags have been properly cleaned and lubed before shooting it, especially if you haven't cleaned them since your purchase. The oils that I've seen on CZ's is great for long term storage, but terrible for shooting.

#2 Mark your mags (numerically or otherwise) and take note as to which one(s) are giving you grief.

Only got experience with EAA's, which are CZ clones, but new mags, patricularly if they have the black phosphated finish, can produce a lot of friction on the ammo, which means the net force pushing up the round in a full mag is greatly reduced. First, get some Wolff +10% mag springs and replace the stock springs. Next, disassemble the mag and polish the snot out of the inside with 600 - 1000 grit sandpaper, followed by a coating of Blue Armadillo wax. Finally, a little moly lube on the mag spring doesn't hurt. In addition, there can be some sharp edges on the breechface which can hang up a round, so use a felt bullet with a Dremel, and coat the felt with JB Bore Paste and dehorn the entire breechface. That should eliminate most of the feeding problems.

Magazines are like brake pads, when they stop working throw them away and get new ones.

Let us know what you find. Through 15 CZ's and over 30 different mags with a total of only 3 failures in years so there likely is some problem besides the gun.

Thanks guys, just got back from the range - a couple other mags ran really well.

Gun was used, ~2000 rounds though it so it's broken in :)

Take a wild guess at promag. CZ used them for a while but most CZ mags are Mecgar.

I can't find any info on them at all, a couple have metal baseplates, a couple have plastic that have a short lip on the front and a couple have a little longer plastic lip on the front. No round count or text of any kind on any of them though. Total of 6 magazines, which is nice... just need to figure out which ones work well and see if I can use the tips above to get the other ones working.

If I could get this thing firing 100% reliable it would be an awesome every day carry gun, love the DA/SA action on it and how well it shoots - thing is more accurate than I am, that's for sure!

Great gun, I love it... just not a self defense weapon at this time, will try some different ammo too.

Oh, one other reason I'm 99% sure it's the magazines is that many times when unloading the ammo from them they get stuck (like the carrier hangs up). I have to whack it a few times to get it to release and bring the ammo up to the top.

I have had the same sticking follower error in my Sig when using ProMag Magazines. They are absolute junk!

Hmmm, wonder if that's what a couple of these are.

Went to Wolff's site today and ordered up:

Extractor spring
Recoil spring
Magazine springs

Will give it a good cleaning when the parts show up and see what happens... will try some Winchester 124 grain instead of this UMC 115 grain stuff too.
