I put 10-15k rounds down range with glocks, but 1911 and P7 are both around maybe 200 per year.
Were I to switch to a j-frame, I wouldn't be able to hit ****.
I don't carry my J-Frame very often, but I always put at least 50-100 rounds through it whenever I go to the range. Adequate practice with what you carry (or might carry) is always going to be necessary. Another important part of the equation is practicing techniques that are not equipment-specific - that is, they will work with all your guns. Proper trigger control, sights picture is going to work with anything you shoot, if applied consistently.
Consider that the gun you fight with might not be
your gun. For example, you might be given a gun by a good guy (the only time I ever deployed a backup gun was to arm an off-duty cop, who wasn't carrying, so he could back me up), or take a gun from an adversary. You could be on vacation and have to acquire a gun locally.
