My Sig P220

Postby kowalzekc on Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:37 am

I recently traded for a Sig P220 with the intentions of reselling to get what I really want, an Ar-15. I was having trouble selling my Rem .243 and decided that there was probably more of a market for a Sig. Now I also told myself that I would not sell it before shooting it to make sure it was straight and true and not a paper weight with night sights. Last week I went up to bills with my little 50 rounds of .45 with the thought of "ehh, its a sig. I am sure it will shoot fine but I wont be overly impressed." I mean after all, I did have a immaculate Kimber Custom, this thing isn't even going to come close to that.

Now I got mags loaded up and decided to shoot DA first, my first thought was "hey, this is a lot like a M9". Well, rounds 2,3-50 REALLY proved me wrong with my thoughts on sig. Other than the few rounds that didn't go to battery, it shot flawless. I maintain that my Kimber shot better over all but holy Heineken do I like this here Sig. Moral of the story is, I think I am going to keep this but Now sadly, no AR15 for me for a while.

Now this is where I would like to pick your brains, who here has/does carry a Sig P220 and what holster setup do you use? Also, has anyone have the issue of failure to go into battery?

Galco Summer comfort IWB with a thick leather belt makes them very carry-able. You probably just need to clean and lubricate it get it running flawless again.

Failure to go into battery is common on brand new Sigs when hand cycling the slide. If it failed to do so while shooting, that is more unusual. Either way, the problem should correct itself within a couple hundred rounds (or less). Sigs have a rail system the full length of the slide, and are usually really tight when brand new. Run her just a little drier than normal on the rails to polish them next time you go shooting and you'll be GTG. After that run the rails wet, and pay extra attention to the underneath of the frame rail - recoil forces when firing force the slide up and to the rear, so make sure there is plenty of lube to handle the upward forces. The Nitride finish on the slide does seem to eat anodizing that isn't well lubed.

As far a a holster goes, you want something nice and tight for a full frame pistol. IWB would work, but you should also take look at the Raven Concealment holster. It holds the pistol in nice and tight, and is really comfortable to wear.

And yes, the P220 is an absolutely fantastic pistol!

Hope this helps :)

That is one of the holsters I was thinking. Also, I was considering a small of back holster.

You were correct the gun was filthy when I got it. Let's see what the next range day brings now that she is clean

Cheap/easy thing to try'd be a heavier/new recoil spring.

I noticed, when futzing with it, my P226 wouldn't go all the way into battery if I rode the slide back very much ... recently put a much stronger spring in it ... no indication of such a thing, no more ... but, as it is, brass is barely trickling outta the thing ... neat! ... but I think I'll go a lbs 'er two lighter. :?

I use the Blackhawk Serpa holster for my Sigs.
The NRA sells them for about as good of a price as I have seen at $35.95.
